Will a SATA 3.0 HD work in my m1710?

Ran a couple quick Googles, found nothing. Is there any incompatibility? Will it work at a reduced speed? Will it work at full speed?

It'll work, yes. It won't be operating at 3.0 levels (like that'll make a difference) since the controller isn't native 3.0, but they're all backwards compatible.

As for your "reduced speed" question, no 300MB/sec SATA drive currently even comes *close* to reaching that outside of some pretty insane hardware RAID setups, so be happy with the occasional 90-110MB/sec reads - they'll be all you get from even the "latest" HD.

Yeah, I had researched it a while ago when a customer asked me if 10,000rpm drives were faster than SATA2 drives for his desktop, and I came up with the same notion on data transfer rates; it's been a while though, and this was faster than researching... sorry, I'm lazy.

Thanks for the quick inputs!
