Screen help 4080, 5:6, 8355

Thread Starter
I need help with a notebook screen decision. I want people who owns the sager 4080, mitac 8355(odm)(SXGA+), or PowerPro 5:6(SXGA+) to give their overall impression of their screen. The most important thing I need to know is how well the screen's contrast/brightness perform. Thanks.

i had the 8335... the viewing angle was pretty limited... you would get the best color/contrast if you looked at it from directly the right angle...

it was pretty colorful tho (comparable to my sun 21" crt monitor)... no ghosting either

blacks came up kinda grey on the lcd... but thast expected if you hve the brightness turned all the way up

and i have the compal 56 on order.... will have a review on that lcd too

rince, it's the same, don't expect it to be better then mitac.

Is it possible that a lot of these laptops, even from different ODMs, use the same screens?
Not just possible -- there are relatively few screen makers. You'll find the same screens across all different machines.

It seems, however that the specs on laptop screens are far below the specs for desktop LCD panels. Where you have Samsung and other desktop LCD panels at 650:1, 750:1, etc. with most notebooks they are 250:1 at best. I am not sure why this is?

I'd guess it's power consumption. You don't have to worry about a desktop panel sucking your battery dry, so they can turn up the juice to get a brighter screen.

That's a total guess, though.

i'd say the best sxga screen would be the sager 4080, I had it for awhile and was returned due heating issue, nonetheless, the screen is very eye candid, talking about glossy, screen was indeed clear and fatastic for movie and gaming view

So, being "glossy", is this screen one of the one's like SONY XBrite, etc. that use the "sheet of plastic over the LCD technology" (that's what I call it) to enhance the contrast??? The SONY is such that when you are sitting at it, you see your reflection in it. Is it like that???
Thanks,

I have the G556 notebook chassis (Voodoo M:460) with the HannStar HSD150PK14 LCD screen. The viewing angle is limited, and the colors are not as good as a CRT. It is very clear (no distortions etc.) and the 25ms RT is pretty good. I have played UT2004, DC, CS, and many other games and it performed wonderfully. There is a “noticeable” amount of ghosting but not enough to affect gameplay.

The colors will never be as good on an LCD as a CRT. The advantages of the LCD are that it is flat, lightweight (stating the obvious) and that they are easier on the eyes over time, no radiation, etc.
The next generations (organics and beyond) should bring more vivid color from flat screens.
