I would appreciate guidance re opening my laptop to replace the hard drive.

dont have one to really show you exactly how. But most 12.1" laptops have their hard drive under the palm rest cover that can be removed by a) removing the bottom screws b) lift up the keyboard - latches are between frame and fn keys and c) sliding back the palm rest.

be careful with the ribbon cables connecting the keyboard and the touch pad to the motherboard

like stated before, the hard drive in this unit is mounted under the top case. when taking it apart, take picture and be organized.
