I might be in the market for a new laptop sometime soon. My current one is a compaq HP presario R3000 that I bought over 4 years ago new. I cant believe back then it cost me alittle over 2 grand for the laptop and a 3 year extended warrenty.

It has serverd me well and is still in good working order. I used to play WOW hardcore back when it first came out on this laptop and it ran farily well (doubt it would now) The only game I play occasionally these days is live for speed(best racing sim EVER!) and it runs pretty crappy.

The problems I have had in the last 4 years with my presario r3000 are
-worn out keyboard due to playing WOW to much (replaced on warrenty)
-power jack problem where computer would run off battery (needed soldering) this problem was so damn annoying.(fixed on warrenty)
-Video card failure (got a new motherboard on warrenty)
-Ac adapter wires frayed causing failure (bought new one for 25 bucks)

After all that and the service I recieved I am still loyal to compaq. The only really problem that made me pretty upset was the powerjack problem where it would run off battery then die.

lol So if you have read my little essay these are the questions I ask

-Has compaq redesigned their power jacks/power supplies since the R3000?
-What is the best laptop for the money in the 600-700 range? (Canadian)
Looking to possibly play the odd game.

Would consider another brand with good reasons/points about them.

Thanks

Based on this, no notebook in your stated price-range will be ideal. I mean NO offense by this, but you are fairly "tough" on your notebooks...which is no crime, just an observation. I have used notebooks daily, for many years, and have yet to kill a keyboard, kill an AC adapter, short out the AC jack, or have a video failure. Some of that certainly is good fortune, but also, some of us just baby their notebooks more than others, as I said, I mean no dis-respect by this comment.

To this day, the AC jacks are still only middling-good at best. After all, they are soldered to the mainboard in most cases, and enough strain or wiggling around of the connector is likely to cause failure. Some designs are better than others, but most are not veryl robust.

As far as fairly rugged notebooks go, at reasonable prices (but not quite as low as your stated price-range), Lenovo comes to mind as a pretty decently built notebook, in terms of overall ruggedness/relaiability and a good keyboard.

i like the HP DV series, and the newer models do sport the hard drive "crash" protection, but otherwise, they are still not particularly rugged models...about on the same par as the Dell Inspiron, Toshiba Satellites, Acer's, Sony Vaio's etc. No better, no worse.

Also, sorry to say, but no notebook in your stated price range is going to be very adept at games. Any and all will come with integrated graphics, be they ATI, Nvidia, or Intel...suitable enough for most day to day tasks, but not enough horse-power to do much of any higher-end gaming.
