Dell fixed my vertical lines, but have I been cheated?

Hi everyone,

I recently returned my 17 inch Inspiron 9300 to Dell for the screen to be replaced because of the vertical line issue. When I bought it, I orded my computer with the"UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife™" screen, which I had to pay extra for, because it was the top end screen.

My laptop returned with a TERRIBLE screen. The colors are faded and they was out if I'm not looking straight at the screen. I also notice dark spots near the edges. I never had any of these problems with my old screen, as I could see vivid colors from practically any angle, and the base of the screen didn't have that white tinge during dark scenes in movies (I don;t recall what you call that).

I have concluded that Dell replaced my screen with the lower quality screen. Is there any way I can have them replace the screen with a proper "UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife™", or am I stuck with this crappy screen?

Thanks in advance

That might be an overstatement?

Have you ever tried to re-solve an issue with Dell tech support? The calls get re-routed to another country and the people are NOT very helpful. I've spent over two hours (transfered no less then 8 times on the first call) in the last week with support to get a 1710 transfered in to my name and the problem is still not resolved. Though they were quick to charge my credit card to extend the warranty on my new machine no questions asked. Now that I'm having an issue with it they won't give me the time of day. I keep getting transfered to extension #0000 then get a recording saying "invalid extension" then it just hangs up on me and we start over > and over > and over...

Anyway, that said: you might want to look up which screen you received. A lot of people have complained about the Samsung made screen. The LG and Sharp are much better products.
Here is a copy of the monitor codes so you can determine which one you now have:
Dell 17” LCD Monitor codes:
<o> </o>
XU670 = 1400 x 900
GH874 = 1920 x 1200 (Samsung) WUXGA
NF463 = 1400 x 900 (LG – Philips) WXGA
TP667 = 1400 x 900 (LGP) WXGA
UG503 = 1920 x 1200 (Samsung)
X9067 = 1920 x 1200 (Samsung)
WD850 = 1920 x 1200 (Sharp)
JH291 – 1920 x 1200 (Sharp)

Here's the latest that I email Dell almost daily; I have yet to get a response. I'd appreciate a message from anyone who has had luck the second time around:
I have an Inspiron 9200. I purchased this laptop when I was still based in Houston, Texas. I was fortunate enough to have my LCD replaced about a year ago here in the Philippines. A subsidiary of Dell here in the Philippines, Accent Micro, came to my home and replaced the defective LCD. Unfortunately, I am experiencing again the vertical line defect. Now, it is a one-inch thick vertical stripe. I remember speaking to the service person while he was replacing the LCD, since I noticed that the replacement LCD has exactly the same part. I was wary having realized this and asked him why Dell was replacing a defective part with exactly the same part. He told me that this new part albeit the same brand and specifications was not defective. I think now he is mistaken. It is frustrating that I, among so many others affected by this defect, experienced this once. But for us to experience it again, well, is, disappointing. UPDATE: I have been sending email messages to vertical_line@dell.com but have yet to get a reply. Is this email address still one that exists and one that Dell attends to?
I think it is unfair to all of us consumers affected by such a faulty part. And to rationalize that we are beyond warranty is unacceptable. Why didn't Dell correct the issue from the beginning by replacing our LCD with a DIFFERENT part?
