..Now finstalled new cpu (m5550), fan kicks in late

Hello i own a M5550 , it has a 7600go and i "had" a T5500 cpu. I installed a T7400 cpu, and now temps are hotter. Not because its a faster processor but because the fan doesnt kick in as much as before. Before wth with my T5500 .. the fan will kick in (at a low speed) when the gpu temp hit 65c. And while playing games the fan kicked in strong, and cooled as needed. With the T7400 installed "in game" temps are the same as before... my gpu wont go past 74-79c. but while im in windows its a whole different story. the fan either kicks in strong or not at all. when the gpu hits 80c it kicks in hard..cools to 75c then idles with no fan... there is no medium/low fan speed like before kicking in at 65c.

so im wondering if anyone had this problem or knows what it might be? people with my same specs...what are your temps like?

Do you have the latest 2.07 firmware installed. This latest FW fixes problems with the fans.

Yes, I actually bought one of the last ones before they discontinued ... before with the old processor fans kicked in as they should. Is there somthing i should reset in the bios after a cpu swap?

Does the bios support this processor? It may be the heat sensor is different so it's not reading temps correctly.

We used to see people use programs like speedfan to control their fans, not sure if there's anything out there that would work on your model of laptop...

Make sure you've got the latest chipset drivers. Not sure where speedstep is controlled with intel processors, AMD's cool n' quiet is controlled by a seperate cpu driver...

im sure my bios supports this chip...along with the T7XXX family i was under the impression it was a direct drop in. other then the fan not kicking in earlier ...this chip is running strong ... it still isnt dangerously hot.. it wont break 80c on the gpu and cpu.. its just annoying that the reason it wont break 80c is because 80c is the magic number for the fans to kick in. I just hope in the long run im not damaging my internals .. if thats the case i might just put the old one back in.

thanks for the speedy replys

try a notebook cooler. Maybe it'll help with the idle temps.

i actually have a notebook cooler... with or with out it my idle temps gpu wise are 75. Without it , it will creep up to 80..then heatsink fan decides to turn on.. brings it back to 75 and shuts off.

I put my old processor back in and the fans work like they should... low speed at 55-64 ... medium speed 64 to 79... then high 79 to 80. With the other processor the first two stages dont exist... Im leaving my old processor back in until i find out what the deal is. kind of sucks though, jumping from 1.66ghz to 2.1 with more cache was nice.

Glad you put the old one back in. It's risky leaving the new one in and not knowing why it's so hot. Temps that high at a consistent base will definitely hurt your internal notebook components.

seems like the bios is not set for that processor need to make sure its the correct bios...

So i just got off the phone with Alienware technical support. Total waste of time. They're advice sounds so generalized and so scripted its not even funny. i had to explain the problem 3 times just so he understood what exactly the problem was. he finally said that i might have to download an update driver for the chipset.. he told me to go to their website and get it from there driver download section (couldnt find it). He then told me that since my warranty is expired he can only give me 15min of his time.... lol

Man. Just call Roswell Support.

Go HERE.

In the first slot, choose your OS, XP or Vista.

In the second, called select a component, choose "mobile systems".

Then choose Alienware as manufacturer, and the m5550 for the drivers. The chipset driver will be there.

For the bios, go to the "My Hive" section, sign in, then click on the invoice for your m5550. This will bring up everything that's related to your platform, including the latest bios.

Well, i called alienware.... they told me to call Intel, I called Intel... they told me to call Alienware. lol .. is there a difference between bios version 2.07 and 2.07w?
Yes there is a difference, the latest Bios helps reduce heat(according to release notes)and it allows you to install 4 gigs of Ram. Sorry, I should have included the W in 2.07W in my post further up.

i just flashed my comp. I downloaded the 2.07w from my hive... everything is the same. When i go into the bios it still says version 2.07.. no "w". Fan still doesnt work the way it should

Have you tried reseating the fan cable? This could be a problem with the temps sensors on the motherboard. Let's hope not.
