Questions and Issues for HP dv9823cl

Bought a refurb HP dv9823cl from buy.com for $600. Specs: dual core 2.0ghz AMD TL-60, 17" WXGA, a/b/g/n, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M. Firstly, it came with 32bit Vista to which i wiped and attempted an XP install with no success in obtaining all compatible drivers. So back to Vista. Upgraded to Ultimate. Upped the RAM from 3gb to 4gb today but only 3gb shows in system info. I contacted HP support and was told that even though 3gb RAM is displayed, the full 4gb is being used in the background. I think this is bullshit actually, but i guess i could be wrong. Must I upgrade to 64bit Vista to fully realize all 4gb? Is there anyway to do this without a clean install? Thanks for any help.

this is getting stranger by the moment. i booted up with one stick at a time and both checked out as bonafide 2gb chips. i then switched the order of the chips and installed the crucial 2gb into slot 1 and the factory installed samsung 2gb in slot 2. It wouldn't boot, and gave me the beep beep that is associated with bad memory. Now they're back in the original order and i'm back to square one with only 3gb recognized. wtf. On a good note...i discovered a second HDD bay that wasn't mentioned in the specs. I've worked with computers my entire life and this system is throwing me curveballs that I've never experienced. Any ideas?
