Port Replicator?

I'm looking for a device to allow me to attach a monitor to my laptop, but would allow me to keep my laptop closed. I have the wire to hook up an external monitor, but when I close my laptop, the image on the screen disappears. Anyone have any opinions on what I can do?

My friend told me about a "port replicator", but I'm not sure if that is what I need.

. verify that "doing nothing when lid closes" option is being checked (power scheme)
. toggle the Fn keys to leave the external monitor as primary
