Inspiron 1420 w/8400m gs - S-Video issues

I'm using an Inspiron 1420 with a Nvidia 8400m GS with S-Video out. I'm having issues trying to connect to my TV. When I connect the S-Video to composite cable to the TV and set the TV to the proper input channel, my computer doesn't see it. My friend uses an Acer with Intel 3100 graphics and connects just fine to the TV, but I'm not having any luck. The cord I'm using is 4-pin S-Video (7-pin out-port, but that's the same as my friend's computer) to composite - aka A/V Video. The TV is less than a month old, but it's a conventional TV and could be a really old model - it's a Skyworth 29T66AA (Chinese brand - I'm currently an expat). I know the composite connectors on the TV work, but I'm trying to avoid the necessity of buying a DVD player here - I've had bad luck with them here in the past and I have no real interest in wasting my money on a DVD player that only plays 1 in 5 discs, and that one in black and white, when I should be able to use my computer for the same purpose.

So, any ideas on how to make my computer recognize that it's connected to a TV?

. providing that tv is being set up the same for both comps, the cable is the same, then you might want to see how the toggling and ouput configuration between your friend's comp and your own
. you do realise that tv resolution will be limited to 800 or 600 for the laptop output signal?

cheers ...

Sorry, I tried to reply a day or so ago, but then the browser was closed before I finished, and I kinda forgot.

I know the resolution will be low, that's fine - I'm not out to get great picture, just enough to watch movies on, and my friend's computer proves that that's manageable.

I'm not sure what you mean by the first part of your post, though, if you mean how the two differ, there's a simple "output to" menu on my friend's computer that contains 4 different options (don't remember what other than TV) - accessible right from the right-click menu. On my computer, I have to try using either Vista's display properties manager or (preferably) nvidia's control panel. However, neither one of them recognizes the TV or offers me the option to output through the S-Video port at all (presumably this would be different if the computer recognized the TV, but I haven't had that happen yet...

Thanks for any more help you or anyone else can provide!
