Need instutions on repairs & Mods Inspiron 1150

Thread Starter
Ooops! I just realized I misspelled the title of this thread, can a MOD/ADMIN fix it for me?
I meant to write " instructions"

I've got this older Laptop, I say I bougt it about 3 years ago..

& its really pretty tired & I'm gonna buy a new one.
But I figure since this will be my back up laptop I'll start doing repairs & mods to it & if I mess it up, I wont be up-set.

Right now 1st thing I'll need to do is replace the Fan. its constantlly shutting down due to over heating & the only way I can keep it running is to lay a fan at its vents..

I do keep it raised up to allow good ventilation, but that alone dont seem to do enough, so now it needs a fan on the outside blowing into it, or it simple shuts down.

Is replacing the fan myself easy to do?

& what else might I wanna do while I'm in there?

Its way past any sort of warrenty, so thats not a issue.

If I remember correctly the 1150's heatsink is small enough you can get it out without having to remove the palmrest. Just pry off the hinge cover, remove the keyboard, and unfasten BOTH the Heatsink and the CPU. The reason I say you want to undo the CPU cam lock AND the Heatsink at the same time is the thermal compound Dell put on these systems from the factory turns to cement as it gets older and you don't want to risk damaging the CPU pins when removing the heatsink. Pry the CPU off the heatsink once it's out of the system.

Once you get the heatsink and CPU seperate, clean up the old white thermal paste that has turned to cement, take the fan out and clean out the nice sweater your computer has knitted you, apply fresh thermal compound (AS5 works well and is easily obtained) and replace the parts.
