dell d600 display error code help

Hello to the group. I have searched the forum and have not had any luck finding help for this problem. I have a dell d600 with Win XP Pro SP3. I have corrupted displays on the dell boot splash screen and the Win XP splash screen, artifacts on the pointer in the windows environment, and in the test mode. When I ran the diagnostics the video test returned an error code "53d0:0119 Dectected a failure while reading and writing video memory". "Video mode " dhb20x200x18) address a0004h expected to read dh a0004h but read ffd0, ffd0h instead.

The error text may not be accurate because the display had vertical lines and was difficult to read.

Thanks in advance for your help.

SOunds like a problem in the RADEON graphics chip....which is soldered directly to the motherboard. You're going to have to replace it to correct this issue.

Thanks, that is what I was afraid of. Thankfully, I am comfortable with soldering small stuff and I have a good grounding strap. I may give it a try. Thanks again.

You can't de-solder the chip on the D600, not without a BGA rework station. Conventional soldering irons won't work. The Radeon 9000 GPU is packaged with dedicated ram which is then soldered to the board with BGA. There are no contacts you can access with a soldering iron.

OK, I guess its a new Motherboard or spring for another laptop. Thanks for the information.
