For those that haven't seen:
http://www.synaptics.com/press/pr_detail.cfm?id=139

According to gizmodo it should be out in windows update for our computers, but seeing I've yet to ever get anything from dell through windows update, does anyone know if we will see these drivers for our touchpads?

bump.

Has anyone possibly seen this come up or are we in the dark?

it requires Synaptics, I think a lot of Dell notebooks use Alps touchpads, not Synaptics ones

This is an excellent topic I haven't heard discussed here in a while. For those who don't know, the majority of Dell notebooks do use the "Alps" touchpad although several use "Synaptics". The Dell has updated drivers for both on its website, the only problem is that it requires some research, as Dell seldom if ever updates the drivers listed specifically for all of the models an update will work on.

For example: the latest driver my i9300 has listed is version 5.4.104.4, A10 dated 1/11/2006. However, if you hunt around by searching thier website you'll find that Dell's latetest Alps Driver for XP32 is version 7.2.101.213, A07 dated 9/17/2008. Which you can download here

This driver adds a number of features not included in the original drivers for my machine and I love the extra features.

If you have a Dell laptop with a different version of Windows than I have, or need the latest Dell "Synaptics" driver, use this search and you'll be able to find exactly what you're looking for.

I hope this helps

Or install the latest generic Synaptics driver directly:

Sadly, ALPS does not make generic versions available for download

Personally, I prefer seeing a Synaptics touchpad on a Dell

Do we need to have one of the newest Synaptics touchpads in order to be able to use this technology?

Or is this technology compatible with our "old" Synaptics touchpads?

I'm not sure about the Synaptics, but based upon what I know from the Alps driver and other pointing devices I've worked with over the years, the newer Synaptics should work fine (if your touchpad is Synaptic). Generally with pointing devices, if there is a newer feature that isn't supported by the particular device natively, it's either dissabled, or not installed; so that the driver is exposing only what is supported by said device.

I hope this helps.
