Do you have to charge up the battery before using it or is it already good to go? Never owned a notebook so I dunno.

From my personal experience (9 notebooks in 10 years) the battery will more than likely arrive with a small charge but does need to be charged to full capacity.

Regardless, its certainly easy enough to check the charge status. If its not in the tray, click Start> Settings> Control Panel> Power.

My 8890 came fully charged, I wasnt able to plug it in at first and I got windows installed and customised and a few apps installed before the battery died (it's probably the only time I've ever needed to use the battery's full potential).

Condition the battery when it comes. Fully charge and drain it 3 times. Here is some more info on conditioning the battery, and laptop battery info.
