A205 DVD Drive not recognized

Computer is one yr old. Had no problem til about 2 months ago. Finally stopped recognizing the DVD completely, even in My Computer. Warranty service replaced the DVD Drive. Works intermittently now. Contacted service, they had me download a patch. Worked for 3 tries. Now back to intermittent. Service suggested a re-format, which I hate to do if it won't fix it. Any one else have success fixing this problem?

. what do you do when "intermittent" occured? how did you recover from it?
. noticing any patterns? apps? media used?

When it doesn't recognize the DVD drive, the only thing that works is to shut it down and wait a few minutes. Then it generally starts working again. A restart doesn't work. This was the same MO prior to service replacing the drive, which they said was defective. The intermittent with the old drive became less frequent until it stopped. Now I have the new drive, the downloaded patch, and the same problem appears to be manifesting.

The problem "may" have started when I bot the Ipod Shuffle and started using "Audiograbber" to transform my CD's to MP3 format for uploading via Itunes. I haven't used the drive for anything else lately, so the intermittent is not related to varying applications. I can be using audiograbber for 1 to 5 CD's before a CD is not recognized.

Thanks for whatever input you can give.

sidetracking a bit: did you modify anything to the registry regarding high-low values?

I'm not a techy, so forgive my dumb response. Service had me do a number of things, which I just followed blindly. I don't know if I modified the registry!

I would propose a windows repair then. This way you wont lose any personal data
