It's too bad that in fact family and close friends are the most likey causes of "lost" equipment in many cases - not all; but, many.

At my last job the company purchased a form of docking station for all the laptops. They would basically lock into the docking station using metal clasps and the docking station was attatched to the desk using huge bolts. It was an amazing system that made it almost imposible to steal... unfortunately I can't remember who mad them. Maybe someone else here knows the manufacturer.

I think I've got one bolted to that desk I stole from the office. I'll have to take a look after I unload it from the truck.

While you can trust your roomate, there are just so many people that come in and out unannounced or a friend shows up with his/her friend etc.. it's hard for either one or both of you to track. As a deterent, get the Kensington lock for your notebook. Yes, someone can use a wire cutter, but it's one additional barrier for the thief to go though to get at your laptop.

The more barriers you put, the less likely your laptop will get stolen. It's like those rebate coupons, they make you mail it in, cut this and that out, just because they know someone will screw up the procedure, forget to mail in, don't want to bother, forget to track the rebate, which saves the company from giving you an actual rebate in the first place; more procedural steps, less likelyhood of completion.

I've had in a dorm room at any one time my 8500, the server, and the 8790 in a dorm with five repeaters, my Linksys router, the Gigabyte router, a hundred or so DVD-Rs, over a thousand bucks work of software, a good amount of AV equipment, and enough networking cable to run the computer from the complete opposite end of the building if desired. I've never considered security because I could trust my roommate 100% to leave my stuff alone and lock the door. Even the complete arse of an ego-maniac I had some time back locked the room and didn't steal anything obvious.

I'd be surprised if I heard someone had something stolen when his or her roommate was completely trustworthy, the door always remained locked (even on bathroom or other short trips), and visitors were watched at all times. Perhaps some campus housing might be safer than residential housing because there are more eyes and ears around (I've learned people stay up to odd hours on campus). Of course, I’m coming from the standpoint few people visit the room and visitors are never left unattended.

Oh, yes; "Two Man Riot" is correct: No one on campus or at work has even heard of "Sager". Sager owners do a lot of advertising for Sager Midern--that's for sure.

For my undergrad Freshie year, I brought a locker box and locked my Enpower (#3) laptop in it every time I wasn't using it. That turned out to be too darned inconvenient, so I began leaving it out. I never really regretted it.

And a story:
One of my acquaintances left his laptop in a bag on the floor one night. The room's central AC unit sprung a leak and began to flood his room that night. When he woke up, he tried to salvage what was left of... well... everything. The university had insurance, so he compiled a list of what was ruined (including the laptop) and turned it in for compensation.
