Reinstalling Vista Family Premium 64 ??

Hello All,

I recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite P300-01S.

I'd love to wipe the hard drive and reinstall Vista, but without all the bloatware which comes with the original installation. And if i'm not mistaking, installing from the restore partition will simply give me all the bloatware again. (correct me if i'm wrong here)

I'd like to know what my options are in terms of my license. Ideally, I'd like to reinstall a clean copy of Vista from a DVD. I have already contacted Toshiba here in Canada and they do not provide Vista on a DVD. They simply tell you to reinstall from the restore partition.
Can I simply use any DVD copy of Vista Family Premium 64 and input my license number?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Your license number is only good for the type of Vista currently on your machine ie Vista Basic, Vista Ultimate etc.
Yes, if you use the restore partition, it will put your laptop in the same condition as when you took it out of the box

Let me rephrase my question another way.
I want to wipe the hard drive and reinstall Vista Family Premium 64bit edition.
I don't have Vista on a DVD, but having it on a DVD is how I want to manage the reinstallation.
Can I use a copy of Vista downloaded from the torrents to successfully reinstall Vista onto my P300-01S. Will doing so be legal (since I do have a license) and will I encounter any technical problems by doing so ? (besides installing hardware specific drivers for the laptop)

If your vista license is for the specific type of vista you want to put on your computer, it will work. In other words, a vista license for Vista Basic will not work for Vista Ultimate. Or a licence for Vista ultimate 32 bit will not work for Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

Not exactly sure what the torrents is or how you can download a copy of an Operating system from anywhere

I just googled Torrents, and from what I have seen, I wouldnt go near there with a 10ft pole. I would suggest, that it would be an excellent place to pick up a virus/trojan or other nasty

You guys are probably right. Torrents are a bad thing.

But the problem I'm having here is that I've paid for the operating system, but I am very restricted in terms of how I can manage it.

When you buy a car, would you like the dealer to tell you when and how you can drive it ???
When you pay for cable, would you like the cable provider to tell you when and how much TV you can watch ???

So why am I being boxed into using the operating system in a way that does not suit my needs ???

Well, if it were me, I would have asked around on one of these forums before buying/downloading anything from that place. The fact remains regardless that the license is only good for a particular type of OS. One license is no good for other varieties of that OS

Yes, I understand that part. If I reinstall, I will definately be using the same OS for which I have a license for.
Nor do I have a problem with laptop. This Toshiba Satellite P300-01S is a great piece of hardware. No doubts about that.
The only gripe I have is that I didn't get the OS on a DVD, that's all.
I think I will solve the problem by simply going out and buying the retail version of the same OS and installing it on my son's gaming desktop. That way he'll have a nice legal version of Vista, including DirectX 10 to play his games, and I'll have a DVD copy of the same OS to use on my laptop. ;-)

N
I live in Canada, and my OS is in french. The french version of Vista Home Premium is called "Vista Family Premium".
So in plain english, my OS is Vista Home Premium 64bit Edition.
Sorry for any confusion on my original post.

Gotcha. Sorry about the confusion too. You undoubtedly know this, but make sure you go to http://support.toshiba.ca/support/Do...ln_byModel.asphave all your Vista 64bit drivers, utilities and such downloaded and burned to a disk before starting your clean install as they will not be on the storebought disk.
Good luck
(Nova Scotia here)
You may have an option remaining on your laptop to create a restore DVD (instructions in the manual) which will have all the bloatware of course but still might be nice to have for down the road should you ever want to sell it.

Thanks for the tip. I will definately put all the drivers onto a CD prior to doing anything.
Now let's talk about Plan "B". Like many people out there, Vista is driving me nuts. And i've honestly tried to get used to it, but It's just not working out.
Do you think I can wipe the drive and install Windows XP ? I'm aware that finding all the drivers may be an issue, but I'm so frustrated with Vista that I'm ready to try anything !!!

Well, that was the purpose of dual booting. You would have a running OS until you made sure that you had everything to make XP run perfectly. Once your are sure you have everything, then, wipe the drive and install XP. I dont recall seeing anyone yet with your model downgrade to XP, but, if you look thru either this side or the other side, you will see it full of people with other models who downgraded. You will also notice that the majority of them couldnt find this driver or that or maybe the function keys didnt work or the media center etc.

Once again saugen48, thanks for the tip. A dual-boot setup is the way to go.
And if that doesn't work, I'll have no choice but to accept Vista.
I'll keep you posted. ;-)
