Resolution Question

Alright, right now I have a 17" CRT that I use on my desktop PC with 1024x768 resolution.

When I even bump it up to maybe 1280x1024 etc its pretty damn small.

Now I read that most of the laptops I'm looking at have like a 15" screen and 1400x1050 resolution (same aspect ratio)

And I'm wondering how small I will think that is... I mean, isn't a 15" LCD = 17" CRT?

Also, I can't imagine gaming at that resolution and having acceptable framerates (in games like UT2004 at least...) and I know that you're not supposed to scale LCD resolutions or it looks bad... is this desktop usage only or in game too? I mean, when you game at 1024x768 on a 1400x1050 native LCD is it going to look really bad?

I'm not sure what to expect, as August will be the first time I ever get a laptop

Go to a store and look at a few.
I don't like tiny screens, due to eye-strain. My desktops have 21" screens that I keep at 1280x1024. My eMachines m6805 has a 15.4" screen and is 1280x800 and I find that this is close to the perfect res & screen size for me on laptops.
This screen is significantly smaller then my 21" desktop, but due to it's wide screen aspect and moderate resolution the screen is very easy to read. I suspect it is at least as easy to read as your 17" desktop @ 1024x768.
I looked at 1400x1050 screens, and I can read them just fine, but I prefer my current res.

Well, all I know is if I was trying to use 1400x1050 on a 17" CRT I'd have to gouge my eyes out

Just wondering how an LCD somehow makes it work on such a small screen?

CRT's are not quite as clear as laptop displays. The trade off is laptops are not quite as pure in color nor as quick on refreshs. Also remember your 17" monitor only has a viewable area of around 15.6 to 15.9 inches, while a 15.4" laptop has all 15.4inches. And a 15.4 inch laptop display will be wider the your present desktop.

My dad owns a dell with 15.4 screen with 1600 x 1200 resolution. It's crystal clear, but there are complications... first of all, YES the text is small... we can increase the text size, but for the work he does (taxes, realestate and such with proseries software), the software doesn't account for resolution changes... so when we enlarge the text size at 1600x1200, all the LETTERS are bigger and get cropped from them bounding boxes. It's retarded, but that's bad programming for you. The 1600x1200 gives you more realestate space, which is nice for photoshop work... but i really couldn't use it for anything else.

you're right though - i have a 19 inch monitor, and the resolution is something like 1200x900 soemthing... anything above that strains my eyes.

well, 1600 x something? it's 15.4, and it's the wsxga, not the uxga... i think the uxga is like 1900 x something? i always remember the first number but not the second :P

jeff bax i have the same concerns regarding scaling in games and frame rates.

No one seems to have an answer. If you ask me 1400x1050 seems retarded. How the hell am I meant to game with that?

I primarily want a top of the range gaming rig.. how am I meant to achieve that with this nutty resolution?
