Making a broken laptop's screen an external monitor....

Thread Starter
Is there any way to do this? My roommate has a broken laptop, and instead of just throwing it away, we were thinking of things to do with it. One idea was making the LCD screen on the monitor into an external monitor. Is this possible?

We looked around on the internet, and could not find any definitive, sure fire way to go about this. Does anybody here have any ideas? Thanks for the help.

It can be done, but its not worth it. In a nutshell, you would need a logic board to convert the vga signals into the lcd input.

Search the net for VGA to LCD.

I really wish notebook vendors would start including a video in for notebooks...

a notebook screen isat a minimum, a 720p HDTV.

so getting the kids a laptop for their room could double as an HDTV for their PS3 etc...

That sounds really a good idea, and this is the first time I hear about it.

I agree. It would also make a great use for old notebooks that have a nice screen but are otherwise obsolete.

Sell the display on eBay then take the money and buy a Flat panel monitor. You'd probably break even. LCD controllers are $250 minimum last I ever priced them, and that's assuming that cheap one works with your LCD panel.
