Hi all, i just bought an m9700 and the cd drive wont work. under the divice manager windows says the driver is corrupt or missing. the drive spins and sounds like it works, but there is no indication that the cd drive is even attached to the computer under the my computer page. i cant find a driver for it on the support cd (but there is a driver for everything else!) what the heck is going on?! i cant find a driver on alienwares page either, its like it doesn't exist! What should i do?
thanks,
Shigera

i have windows xp

The driver is provided automatically by the operating system for the drive. It sounds like your drive has failed. You should be able to get a replacement fairly cheap, and you can reuse the bezel on your current drive.

It's possible you've got a driver conflict, so you can try reformatting and reloading the OS to see if it fixes it, but it's probably the drive itself.

Another way to check if the drive has failed it to go into the Bios and check your IDE Devices. If its not there, then the drive has failed. It will still spin and make noises but it has probably failed. This is a common fault on all lappies.

Press F2 when your comp is starting up to go into the Bios. Then look for IDE Drives. You should see your Hard Drive as a master and then your dvd/cd rom as a secondary but like I said, if it's not there, then it's most likely failed. As a last resort, you can check the connections or try re-seating your drive.

This happened on my Sentia last week and I just bought a replacement drive. Works like a charm now!
