Woah! A question by fiction? About a laptop! no way, I thought he was ub3r sm4rt!!

Anyway, I was wondering, since most of you tell in your reviews that the left palm rest gets pretty hot.. is that because of the harddrive? And if you got a slower model HDD, like a 5400 or 4200rpm, would it produce less it? And is it really that noticeable?

I had dual 5,400 80GB drives and it was still warm.

I think (just MHO) that this is the area that is not well vented. There are two large fans that cool the CPU and GPU and a tiny fan that (intakes/exhausts - different people report differenct things about this fan) that is to cool the HDDs, WiFi, BlueTooth, Keyboard, Memory, 7-in-1 card, Modem, Lan, PCMICA, and DVD Drive.

I really don't think switching to a 4,200 RPM drive it going to help much. The HDDs are actually placed about center front on the 8790.

I have the 7200/60's in raid 0 and mine gets toasty warm but not hot. System temps go between 40 and 50 during productivity stuff and mid 50s with the fans in the high setting while gaming. IMO this isnt likely to be an issue (of the dealbreaker variety) unless you are unusually sensitive to heat in your left wrist area. To put another perspective on it I have had a Toshiba and a couple others that got hotter in the same spot with far less powerful drives, CPU,s etc.

My 8790's hard drive (7200) gets up to 60C while defragging, and even that does not feel hot to the touch.

After switching from the Prescott to the Northwood, I would say mine only gets very mildly warm to the touch. Prescott was enough to cook an egg, if you left it long enough.

The heat is definately noticable. It gets pretty warm, but i honestly like it...its a handwarmer

I havent had the chance to game at all with this computer because of my heat/gpu issues. I should be receiving a new one this week, so I can finally game with it, but I dont expect it to ever get too hot.

Im actually looking forward to the warmness during the winters up here in the snow

Also use Artic silver on your CPU. I tell you mind just does not get very warm. I mean I am on it for HOURS playing Gunbound, Battlefield Vietnam, and Lineage 2 (Beta) and it is a very cool customer. My 4780 was way hotter.

The fan settings on the 4780 are quite a bit higher than the 8790. They kick in at 60 and bring it down to 50. The 8790 kicks the fans in at 50 and they go until 40.
