8887 Knockoff!

I just recently went and looked at a "what they called a dell clone 8894" from the comptuer edge magazine. Well not knowing anthing about sager notebooks at all when I saw it, I thought this thing was oversized, heavy, and look liked cheap plastic to me. Well a week went by and when I noticed the sage notebooks in a magazine add, and thought to my self these are pretty good laptops from the specs i was reading. Well come to find out upon further reading I said to myself man this looks and has the same stuff as the clone I just saw. Well not bagging on the sager 8887, but does the sager seem to better quality from the discription I just gave, or was the clone a really bad knockoff. Well the reason I'm writing this is because I am planning on buying the 5660 and now I'm getting skeptical on buying it because if the 8887 has the same charataristics as the clone then, it really doesn't seem like a good computer to me. Oh and by the way this laptop you could only run win98 or xp nothing else, not linux, nothing. Well hopefully someone can clear this up for me, this way I won't buy some cheap molded plastic laptop with good features. If I do buy the 5660, I just hope It won't feel fake or look generic like the dell clone did.

Again, not bagging on any of the sager's, but that dell clone left a bad taste in my mouth. Now that I noticed the 8887 looks and has the same features, Well its kinda making me say, "Well I don't know anymore bout those sager's, maybe I should get a regular name brand notebook."

Hopefully someone can set this issue strait.

Peace

Maybe, but---

It looks exactly the same and has the same specs and everything. Now I havent seen the 8887 up close, but if you saw two advertisements one of the clone and one of the sager and compared specs then you would say they are and look exactly the same, besides the different names.

There are differences

Clevo is a taiwan based manufacturer that makes the Sagers. Sager then chooses some internal components and badges them and wallah!

You and I can buy the bare bones laptops from clevo and fill it with mud and sell it. There are plenty of clones available that use the same skeleton - and maybe the same internals as well. Sager is an old brand actually - more like 15 - 17 years in this game.

Buying a sager is a matter of personal choice. There is no laptop as versatile as this one and we have users who have used a myriad of OSes with fair results. The 8887 with HT may have an issue of being slanted to the XP OS but the other systems are not. Even the 8887 has been run with Win 2k etc. so I dont think this is an issue.

Reading the threads on this forums should tell you what you want to know about these laptops. They are IMO fantastic and well worth the price.

Sager is also a trustable brand provided you buy from a recognized reseller.

I have the 5660 as you will notice from my signature - if you have any questions send me a pm and check my review in the reviews section. its called the gsferrari 5660 review.

Best of luck...

The Sagers can and do run some flavors of Linux - just cruise the Linux forums and see. Although, as with any laptop, there may be a bit of work involved to get up and running with linux.

I don't see why anyone would want to run 98 on a laptop; 2000 and XP are definately preferable.

While I cannot attest to the 5660, my 8887 feels pretty solid. Yes the case is moulded plastic - if it were all metal, the 12-lbs laptop would probably be 15+ lbs!

Make sure you scan over these forums to know the Pro's and Con's of a Sager. Maybe that will help you decide one way or another.

If it was the same, and you consider the design to be cheap molded plastic - I say "Better to have cheap molded plastic on the outside and high quality components on the inside as opposed to the other way around."

Sony has a great looking laptop.

Definetly go with sager, they are not cheap, and you can't judge something by its picture alone, you dont judge a book by a cover do you? ok well your not supposed to. See if anyone local to you has a sager (you'd be surprised) Maybe take a look at it, see what its all about. if you do want smal thin light etc, then sager is not for you. But if you want a HIGH quality machine, at a VERY good price, then sager is what ya want.

Sager definevely

If you want a "notebook" with very very good performance (= All), you ust go with sager, but if you just want a pretty laptog, go others like Sony .

Do not go just with the name who is up to cornflakes portrait or in magazzines, just llook at sager issues and you will see what is real power.

hope you'll find the correct way soon

Thanks for the input

Hey I agree with you on the Sony laptops Jeffinflorida.

I know, I used to work in that computer department here in San Diego. Let me tell you if you new what I new about sony computers(desktops and notebooks), well I don't think you would ever look at their computers the same way.

As far as the replies goes I just want to say thanks to everyone for your input and clearing this issue up. Yeah, I still think im going to stay with instinct, and get the 5660 especially even more so now that all my questions were better explained, even all the way down to its history of Sagar business.

Thanks again,

Peace
