Anyone interested in the new MBP? - Page 2

yeah it is a GREAT laptop and seems to satisfy all my cravings in speed a 15" could offer, especially in the physical size of the machine. I can't use it for photography with the LCD as it is, but if i have to I will just use it hooked up to one of my external LCD's.

Well i did get the latest drivers installed. I used the nvidia modder thingy and modded the desktop drivers so i could install the nvidia physics stuff. I played about4 hours of COD: World at War lastnight and it was flawless. Extremely happy on that aspect of the machine.

Hi maxrule, have you seen any way that the new track pad can simulate left and right click in windows? I heard some talk about this being possible.
It was possible on the old ones, I see no reason the new ones should be different.

Yes you can. There is an option to turn right click on in the options. The trackpad knows if you are pushing on the left or right side of the button. It works really well. The glass surface of this thing is the best trackpad to date on any laptop i have used.

Maxrule, are you using Vista or XP on your system? On Vista I cannot find where the setting is.

well... vista has now let me down for the second time in two months... its killed itself yet again on my m1710.

i dont want to keep fighting with it, dell warranty is up, and i think im going to start the search for a new machine. i was gonna pick up a macbook air a few months back but never did, and now im seriously thinking that the new macbook pro would just about do everything i want.

im sick of the windows bullsh*t

Go for it, Fidget!

well upon further inspection, two attempts at a vista reinstall, and an xp install, it would appear that its not vista thats screwed me its that the video card bit it at least partially.

its come down to (likely) replacing the card and praying that nothing else goes wrong with it or taking the nice discount i get at work on apple products and just jumping on a new macbook pro.

work gives me a discount that drops the price of a basic macbook pro by 200 to 300... so a pretty decent deal really, i wouldnt mind knowing what you owners thought of it? should i make the jump or try to revive the beast and hope it keeps working?

either way im going to pick up a new machine before this time next year since i need a reliable machine for law school and i dont want to fight with the m1710 much more. so far in its lifetime with me (since the week it was first released) its been through 3 dvd burners, a motherboard, a palmrest, two power supplies, a wireless card.... and the m1710 was a full system replacement for a dead m170 which fried itself from the videocard out. since the last dell repairs the 1710 was going well and now this.... im starting to think that this is a sign that i should just let it rest in peace.

I'm partial to Macs, Fidget. The new MacBook Pros are very "tight" - the unibody construction gives it a sleeker appearance. I'm not all that crazy about the new black keys, but the responsiveness of the keyboard is good. I like the display better on the new ones as well - and the fact that it's glossy shouldn't bother you given you've been using the same. It's hard to explain, but it's not quite as "high gloss" as my previous Dell or Alienware displays. The new trackpad design takes a bit of getting used to, but it's much like my AW m9700, so not much of a change for me.

Fidget whether or not you get a Mac, but that point in a laptop's life it is time to consider it unreliable for me. If you have gone through that many repairs on it and it is still having problems, replace it with SOMETHING. My personal opinion, but my laptops and other machines tend to need to have a very high availability.

Fidget:

I made the switch to Mac last November have not looked back. I absolutley love OSX and will not own a M$ product again. The machines are well built, they get OS and hardware firmware updates from the same place all at one time.

I do run XP on a couple them simply to play a couple games and thats it. I do love M$ however, I make my living fixing M$ products everyday.

The new glass front on the MBP's is actually pretty nice. It has a different appearance than a normal glossy screen. Great for movies, gmes and the such. I love the trackpads feel and movement. It is so smooth.

Okay...

so im still lookin at a mac for after christmas (or at christmas...) and im curious about the external display options. I would want to be able to hook it up to the HDTV. but it has no HDMI out and only DVI through the adaptor. the question is would i need to use the DVI adapter and then use a DVI to HDMI cable in order to use HDMI? or does apple have some other connection?

also similar question for Svideo output (for projectors and such)?

Currently you would have to get the DisplayPort to DVI adaptor and then a DVI to HDMI adaptor to do this. I don't foresee Apple offering a DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor anytime soon. But Apple is licencing Mini DisplayPort for free so it's very possible that third parties will come out with it.

For S-Video or composite you'll have to do the same with multiple adaptors.
