questions about matching notebook resolution to external lcd monitor's resolution

Hi.

I have an Asus 15.4" notebook with a resolution of 1680x1050. I am trying to get a docking station and setting up an external lcd monitor.

Question: Do I need to match and get a lcd monitor that also has the native resolution of 1680x1050 to retain maximum clarity? From right click desktop properties->settings I know I can set the resolution of the second monitor, but does the lcd monitor's resolution have to match the notebook's native resolution?

I intend to purchase another laptop in a year and the resolution is most likely going to be smaller (1440x900 or one of those 10" notebooks), so if the native resolution has to match then I don't want to get a monitor now.

Hope I am describing what I want to say clearly..

The next answer is based on my personal (and limited) experience:

There is no need to match the resolutions IF your video card is capable of doing DualView (like some nVidia GPUs) or something similar.

If your going to clone the screen, then it is better to match the resolutions, otherwise the higher resolution monitor will be forced to display a lower resolution (the one of the other monitor).

We would need to know what type of video card your ASUS uses to answer that question but I'm pretty sure any late model computer would allow you to set the external monitor's resolution independently of the laptop's screen.

The video card is ati mobility x600 with omega drivers (3.8.442).

also, is there a tv tuner that is available so that it'll be able to watch tv after next february?

If it has an analogue TV tuner it won't work after Feb. Nothing you can do about that except get a new one. I'm not sure if an internal swap is available but ASUS should be able to answer that question for you. There are plenty of options for small external, USB digital tuners you can pick up at local retailers.

I'm not familiar with the drivers you're using and haven't used Omega drivers in a long time. As I recall though you still use the AMD control panel so open it up and check if you can set the external monitor to a different resolution. I would be willing to bet you can.
