Dell Vostro 1400/1500/1700 lid finish?

So I'm doing some light modding to my laptop (Vostro 1500) and I noticed that underneath the black finish the magnesium is pretty easy to expose, and I was thinking about etching something into the case (i.e. with the magnesium as the outline). Would this be bad for my computer (oxidation, backlight bleed, etc.) or is it safe?

shouldn't be a problem. The backlight is contained within the LCD panel itself, not within the lid. The paint is really just there as a coating and to the best of my knowledge the alloy Dell uses for their systems doesn't oxidize. It'll be either Aluminium or Magnesium or a combination neither of which will have an oxidation issue.
