With all the games mentioned around here I found Far Cry 2 strangely absent in the conversation. Anyway, I didn't like the original that much but I guess I will get around to trying it soon enough.

I second the screens and maybe some relative settings vs fps on your 8800.

Haven't gotten too far with this game, but here's my initial impression in a nutshell:

After od'ing on Crysis/Crysis Warhead, this game is a refreshing respite. No aliens, no mutants, no irritating caves/mazes, just a straight out shooter with conventional weaponry. A machete, assorted pistols and machine guns that jam every so often. And oh, no nano suits.

As FPS games go, this game is not atypical. You are a soldier of fortune/mercenary sent to this beleaguered African nation to assasinate an arms dealer who plays both sides of two warring factions. So, really, nothing new there. But what sets this game apart from other shooters IMHO is the amazing realism of the environ. You can go from a lush tropical jungle setting to a a grassy savanna to a barren desert. While driving through a savanna, I was confronted by this herd of buffaloes. One actually charged into the jeep I was riding on. How realistic is that! I thought I saw some antelopes and zebras also. The geography and topography is just visually stunning. It's like being in one of those nat'l geographic travelogues, except that along the way, you have kill some baddies. The weather and time element is fantastic. The sunsets and sunrises are awesome to behold.

Another important aspect of this game, at least for me, is the open-endedness of the enviroment (unlike most fps). You are presented with I don't remember how many square miles of real estate, but it's vast and you are free to roam in any which way (preferably in a motor vehichle with a mounted machine gun).

BTW, if you don' have a super duper rig, you won't feel nauseated playing this game. With my opteron 165 with the 8800 gt, I can play on high and very high settings, 1920 x 1200, 2xaa @30-40 fps with no hiccups at all.

I highly recommend this game.

I second all of the above. The exact number on the size of the game/map is 20 square miles which is a hell of a lot of territory for sure.

I'd definitely recommend the game. I think the thing I most enjoy is the fact that the environment in general feels really authentic (aside from the fact that there are generally no civilians, it's almost exclusively enemies or allies). As was said, the introduction of animals is a great addition along with other small components that just put it all together. For example, I love that the guns occasionally explode or jam, and the engine of your car will begin to degrade the more it gets shot at or beaten up which can be fixed with your handy dandy ratchet.

I'll get some screen shots tonight if possible and post the specs it's running at and all that good stuff

Wow, really nice shots PD. I would have loved to download some sunset/sunrise scenes with the sun just above the horizon with the rays filtering through the trees, but I don't subscribe to any of those photo storage websites.

Anyway, enjoy the game as I am.

I'll try to get a nice shot as you described as well. I remember when Crysis first came out the "god ray" effect was one of the coolest features

Definitely enjoying the game! I think the fact that I enjoy both multiplayer and singleplayer is really a benefit to the game, most games I usually tend to just stick to one side and it gets a little to repetitive after a while.

Either way, must be going now but enjoy the screenshots prospective FC2 owners

Yeah, it's not very good. I was expecting some Aliens or something....
Unfortunately, I have to agree. This game is a dud!

Far Cry 2 is an epic win.

It doesn't have the flashyness of Crysis nor the hi-tech gismos, but the physics as well as AI behaviour is second to none.

Plus, the brush fires really rape everything.

I really didn't like this game. some new concepts but tired and boring game play ruined it.
