p100 memory upgrade problems

Thread Starter
I read on the toshiba website that my p100 can support of to 4gb 533mhz ram. I purchased some 'accidentally' mislabeled ram. I bought 2x1gb sticks of 633mhz. I put them in - machine ran fine. I decided to go to the max4gb, so returned those, and bought 2x2gb sticks, same speed. Put them in - machine doesn't run. It won't seem to run with more than 2gb in it.

It turns on, and goes to toshiba's boot screen - and I can access the system setup, where it will show how much ram the system has - but it will go no further.

I've put a lot of ram in a lot of machines and never had this particular problem.

what am i doing wrong?

If you are using Vista/winXP 32 bit system, your system will not recognize more than 3 GB's. You have to be using a 64bit OS in order for it to be able to use and see more than the 3 GBs. According to Crucial.com, your system will support DDR2 PC2-5300 and not 633mhz, I would suggest going back to the 533

The issue shouldn't be windows -- the real restriction is in the amount of *addressable* ram; it will still boot, but windows32 won't report more than 3GB of ram.

The issue actually could be the memory speed. Usually you can get by with buying memory that is rated at a higher speed than your motherboard can handle, and it just downclocks the ram appropriately. But, not every memory chip will downclock correctly.

You could also have a faulty memory chip. Try booting with just one 2GB chip in, and the other memory slot empty. If that works, switch to the other chip. If both work separately, then it's probably a Windows issue. If neither works by itself, then you just need to get 5300 ram. If one works but not the other, you likely have a defective chip.
