Asus or Lenovo for video editing?

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm looking for a laptop for general work use and home video editing. It will usually be used at home, plugged in, with a monitor, so screen size isn't that important to me. There are two laptops around $700 I'm looking at. I can also get a printer/scanner/copier for $30 and a free wireless router in I buy the Lenovo at CC, but what's most important to me is getting a computer that works well for video editing. Here are the specs, anything not included is pretty comparable on both computers. I'm mostly wondering about the video card/video memory. Thanks in advance for your help!

Asus X83Vb-X1 ($699)
Intel Centrino Core2 Duo processor T5800
4GB PC5300 DDR2 memory, 2.26GHz, 3MB L2 cache
250 GB Hard Drive (7200rpm)
NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS graphics w/ up to 512MB DDR memory
LightScribe

Lenovo IdeaPad Y530-5243U ($665)
Intel Core2 Duo processor T5800
4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300), 2GHz, 2MB L2 cache
320 GB Hard Drive (5400rpm)
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD with up to 1759MB of shared video memory

Video editing doesn't use the video card as much as the name might imply Yes some compositing and special effects certainly do IIRC, but basic editing would probably not touch it at all. So in this regards I would look at the software you are planning on using and just make sure they both match the requirements.

What will make the larger difference for you will be RAM and disk access. In almost all cases I would say you are better off using an external drive via FW800 or eSATA(In some cases FW400 may be acceptable for a single drive) than depending on the internal. So in that regards I am not even certain I would put much stock on the internal drive size either.

Because of this, I would concentrate on CPU and RAM, as well as overall quality. I have a perosnal preference for a QUIET computer, which not all laptops fit this bill. Look up the reviews on both computers and see which one seems to have the better overall quality. The ones that run quieter probably have a better designed cooling system as well(So long as you don't hear of problems in overheating). Make sure you have plenty of RAM and a good strong CPU.

Personal preference here, but if you can, try to ensure there is a Ti Firewire chipset, though this is more important for audio than video IIRC.

So on to the two laptops in question here. In general based only off the specs you have posted, the Asus seems the better bet. I would still look for reviews on quality though as I suspect the overall quality of the Lenovo might very well beat out the Asus. I have personally not been to impressed with the quality of their low end laptops anyways. So long as you don't hear of a significant difference in quality(Which I can't answer for you) the Asus seems like the better buy slightly.
