Glossy screens tend to have more vibrant colors and better contrast, but they also reflect light sources and thus can be annoying when used in certain environments. Matte screens do not have the reflection problem, but they also generally have slightly less vibrant colors and lower contrast.

I really, really dislike glossy screens. I've used laptops with glossy screens a few times; where the laptop can be placed, the screen angle and where I can be is limited by the process of minimizing the reflections of myself, the keyboard, white walls, lamps, windows, etc.

Aside from the glare potentially causing eye-strain, I fail to see how having a reflective surface makes the screen look better. Checking out display laptops, I've seen screens where Windows had a dark desktop background, which produced a near-mirror effect.

Years ago anti-glare coatings were a considered good (essential for a high end monitor), now 'glossy' is the in thing....

I don't like glossy. I hate using my sister's Vaio because it is like a mirror in certain conditions, which sucks.

I love my Thinkpad's matte screen. No reflections what so ever.

Although the Vaio's screen is much more colorful and bright (obviously, it's a Sony), I would take my boring lackluster display over the glossy any day. I don't think I would ever buy a laptop with a glossy display.

Glossy LCD screens are almost impossible to use in environments lit by fluorescent lighting as parts of the screen will be completely obscured by the reflection of the light. Generally at home they'll be perfectly fine and look better than the matte screens.
