I apply arctic silver to all my systems as soon as I receive them, whether they're home built, or built by a company like Alienware.

i applied artic silver to the gpu heatsink, but not the northbridge and techpowerup's gpu-z is showing low 70s degrees celsius. is this normal? i'm also afraid of opening up the cpu heatsink, since i don't want to damage it and void the warranty. i'll apply that later when things get too hot. or when my warranty runs out.

i'm glad to have my laptop up and running again.

70 deg for the gpu? That's within normal range. nVidia cards usually idle around 70, but shouldn't go into the 90's under load.

with the M9750 the idle for a GPU is around 60 degrees...

i get mid to upper 60ºs when i have my window open in my room and the temperature is about 50s (ºF)? outside. but in my studio, which has the heater running, it runs about 71-72ºC.

hm.. just got to studio and laptop's been on for about 15 mintues now. maybe it's because of the burn-in time or something, but the temp for the gpu right now is jumping between 66º and 67ºC at my studio.

everything's running great! thanks for the help guys.

update: my computer does idle around the low 70s. i watched it slowly warm up. but while playing cs, it goes into the low 90s. should i also artic silver the north bridge?

Glad this worked out, I've seen a few video card failures over the years and the posted pics are textbook examples.

When you say your computer, do you mean the cpu and not the vid cards?

If it's the cpu, I think the 90s are high for intel, but I don't have one so I can't be sure. My AMD turion gets into the mid 80's and it supposedly runs hotter than the intel chips, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to apply AS5 to the cpu.

It's a lot easier than you think though it can be nerve wracking the first time... Once you've done it though, it's easy to do it again.

If you're under warranty, you can let Alienware know your issues and either have them help you or send it to them for repair. I would just follow this tutorial on the m9700, it should be pretty much the same deal for the m9750.

Here is the tutorial.

I would recommend Arctic Silver 5, you can get it at Newegg.com. They also have a good tutorial on their website.

Hey, sorry to revive a month+ old post, but I just got struck with this

<backstory>
I popped in a DVD movie and the screen froze. Rebooted the machine and the LCD would light up but remain black for about 20 seconds(fan spins but stops after 20 seconds). If I connect a LCD in the VGA port, I get the same video output(with strange quotes all over the screen - or I get the low, washed out colors on Safe mode).
</backstory>

I have a m9750 with 1 7950 GTX, does this mean my video card is bad and I should replace it?

So to those who fixed it, it was definilely the video card??

I saw that a couple of others had a similar problem and I wanted to know if the video card fixed the problems each and every time... Sorry for making people repeat themselves, but with the parts hard to come by and being expensive, I'd like to increase my chances of success on this expensive trial-and-error.

Thanks in advance!

To those who had this happen to them - did you guys experience any telltale signs? Maybe graphical artifacts during full screen games/DVD playback?

if you still have ur warranty then I would call alienware and let them figure out what is wrong they can send you a vid card in the mail and let u install it urself if you feel comfortable doing it if that is the problem...

Hey, thanks for your response - unfortunately, my warranty expired about 2 years ago as I only had the default 1 year warranty.

I have no problems installing the video card myself, and I would prefer to do it myself than ship it over somewhere.

I thought my problem was related to the motherboard until I had read this post, and the pictures attached looked identical to my problem.

To those who said the video card fixed their problems - is your laptop still running well without problems(read: was it really the faulty video card??)?

Thanks in advance
