emachines M6809 or Compaq R3000T

Hey, I am trying to find my first laptop. I start graduate school and I need the thing to last for at least 2 years (hence I want a 2 year service plan). I will have a couple of compilers on there, do email, play games (like CoD, UT2004, and like those...no Half Life 2). After looking, I am down to really 2 systems (or if you have an option please give away). BTW, I can only spend around $1600...

1) I like the Emchines M6809. I think you guys know the stats on it.
- emachine 2 year service plan $108
- total - $1757.99 (before $100 rebate)

2) Compaq R3000T:
- Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 3.06 GHz w/HT
- Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional
- 512MB DDR SDRAM (2x256MB)
- 40 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
- DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
- 54g(TM) Integrated Broadcom 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
- FREE Upgrade from 15" XGA to 15.4" WXGA (1280x800)
- 64MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) 9600
- Microsoft(R) Works/Money
- 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

- 2 year service plan

- total: $1,722.99 (before $100 rebate)

any suggestions? thanks

And plus eMachines sheer CPU power and nice accessories just kicks it's ass.

If you find it in BB, they have $250 Mail in rebate.

Do you think having XP home and not XP pro will hurt its performance?

No. I have had both Pro and Home and there was very little difference.

I have never owned a Emachine, but my Compaq Notebook has been very reliable and stable. The only problem in 2 years of ownership has been 3 dead keys which was repaired under extened warranty. Mine is a PIII and does not compare to the newer faster P4's and Athlons, but it seems to be a well built notebook.

I looked at several of the new R3000T series notebooks as a replacement for my current notebook. I really like the R3000T series, but wished it came with a 128MB VGC.

Anyway, good luck with your purchase.

John
