Alienware: New M17 with mobile Quad and CrossFire - Page 2

I think 2 to 3 years s a good time to upgrade, especially a notebook. Even more if your warranty is expiring soon....

im broke =/ maybe a few more months to a year to upgrade from my m9700 for me

Well, the biggest advantage of this is the PRICE, apparently PRICE is the most concerned in this economic situation.

And it's the cheapest across Canada.

This thread is strange because I don't know of any legitimate benchmarks for this thing. Does anyone have any idea how well this configuration will perform?

Performance? Oh yeah it performs! Dual 8800m's are only slightly faster...

Ohhh thats just wrong!!!!!
Cyber Power selling the same rig sans logo as AW, AW hide your head in shame! Can I get a BMW 3 series with Pinto branding!

AW offers you warranties that you won't have if you go elsewhere. Some folks here are quite capable techs on their own and don't worry so much about warranties and service, but when a machine is 3 years old and breaks, you don't want to trash it, and you suddenly value that warranty a lot more.

OK, That looks like it's almost as fast as a single 9800M GTX in 3DMark06 and about 12-15% faster than a single 8800M GTX or 9800M GT. In that particular example the computer is an overclocked X9100 running at 3.3GHz.

And that's assuming in real world applications that crossfire scaling works as well as it does in 3DMark. Many games will favor the AMD cards over NVidia and vice versa so true direct comparisons are difficult except in the specific games you're interested in.

I don't mean to sound cynical, I'm not saying this is a bad thing, it's just not breakthrough and the price is on par with what's already out there in a similar performance category.

It's "on par" with other things out there but cheaper. I think ATI intended the Crossfire 3870 as a warning shot across Nvidia's bow. About equal performance, and lots less $$.

Be wary of '06 scores also, if there is a quad core involved because that drives up the scores. With both Montevina and Sager quad core machines out there, you might find some "fun" '06 scores

AW are just re branded Sagers.

Yes it's definitely a good price but like you, I'm wary of '06 scores, especially when talking about dual cards, and would like to see some real world gaming benchmarks.

So who makes the ocz whitebooks? surely not OCZ, MSI perhaps? I think most of us already know that alienware is not an ODM and their laptops come from elswhere and can be had elsewhere for ALOT less money.

Yes. Every notebook they sell is considering a gaming notebook. They have a huge reputation of exotic powerful machines.

While they used to also sell non-gaming notebooks (the Sentia line), Steve's correct that all the notebooks they sell currently are well equipped for gaming.
