Dell D630 CPU upgrade

I am going to receive the new D630 in this 2 weeks. I have bid on ebay the Nvidia graphic mainboard to replace the intel graphic board, and am now thinking to replace the CPU as well. Is the mainboard able to support normal C2D processor found by roadside, or only special mobile type CPU is supported?

Thank you.

Normal core 2 duos you are going to find on a retail shelf are for DESKTOPS. They will not work in a laptop. However you should be able to order a compatible CPU from an online vendor. Newegg.com in the past has carried mobile CPUs.

As far as your GPU upgrade, you're going to need a new heatsink as well as the board. The Heatsink on an intel integrated system only has two blocks, one for the CPU and one for the chipset. The Dedicated graphics models have three blocks with an extra heatpipe.

Mobile CPU is very expensive T_T... Does D630 come with GM45 or GM965 chipset? Is there an bios option for multiplier adjustment if intel extreme cpu is installed?

Ohh no... what is the part no. for the GPU heatsink? I search in ebay there are 2 types- KN982 & DT785. which one is for nvidia chipset? The DT785 has a Y-shape heatpipe setup.

Thank you.

Merom & Penryn 1st generation are all supported by D630, just make sure you update to the latest A13 BIOS.

Merom: T7100/T7300/T7500/T7700/T7800/X7800/X7900 (last 2 would be very hot)
Penryn: T8100/T8300/T9300/T9500/X9000

Thank you very much for the info!

Merom & Penryn will do

Most of the C2D would be supported by D630.

But considering you are upgrading for better performance, I would suggest the following as candidates:

T7500 / T7700
T8300 / T9300 / T9500

Honestly, a new mobile CPU is much more expensive than a desktop CPU. And the D630 itself must have not been cheap, or the replacement motherboard.

With all of that work, wouldn't it just make more sense to buy a new laptop with a new warranty? Something like a Dell XPS M1530 goes for $500-$600 used, and $1000 new, and it will have a better GPU and screen than anything you could cram into a D630.

The problem is i cannot buy a new laptop. the laptop is company laptop with basic performance, so i must keep the casing and only replace whatever inside. I have replaced the intel graphic mainboard to NV135m board, and now wish to upgrade the CPU to maximum. The company does not allow employee to bring own laptop.

Is T9600 / T9800 supported by D630?

I have a d630 and I am planning on getting a x7900 which the guy up there says is supported and it is the best 1 only because I found a good deal on a new 1

If you are not using nvidia display then X7900 may work properly. D630 heat sink is too inefficient for that. I have nvidia and x9000 which ia very hot at default speed. I do not use active cooling pad but I put it on dock station so there is ample space beneath for cool air. X7900 is warmer than x9000 because of higher TDP and manufacturing process. The motherboard supports x7900, the issue is just the heat. Nvidia display itself is hot too.
