Gateway P-7811 vs Dell XPS 1730

Ok, my i9300 is on it's last leg, three years in the heat of Thailand has taken it's toll. Now I am tenativly looking for a replacement.

One of the main things for me was it had to be 17" and 1920x1200 and a decent gaming gpu.

So my question (after searching for bench marks) is which would you pick

The Gateway with the 2.26 ghz 3mb cache and 512mb 9800m GTS

or

The Dell with a 2.5 ghz 6mb cache and sli 8700m gt (total of 512mb in sli)

The best buy's near me still have some of the gateways in stock, and I would get the XPS from dell outlet, so both would be around $1350-$1500

I don't think the Gateway has a high resolution WUXGA screen.

If you can get that Dell XPS 1730 with a 1920x1200 screen for $1500 that's a really good price. I think it also includes 4GB RAM and a 320GB 7200rpm hard drive?

I'm usually sceptical of using slower graphics cards in SLI but I think a pair of 8700M cards will match a single 9800M GTS.

The disadvantage is the greater weight and probably less battery power of the Dell.

the gateway is a 1920x1200
specs are:

* Intel® Centrino® 2 processor technology with interrelated Intel® Core™2 Duo processor P8400, Intel® Mobile PM45 Express chipset, Intel® Wireless Wi-Fi Link network connection (802.11a/b/g/n), extended battery life capability
* 4GB DDR3 memory for multitasking power, 1066MHz frontside bus, 3MB L2 cache and 2.26GHz pocessor speed
* Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support records up to 8.5GB of data or 4 hours of video using compatible DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL media; supports DVD-RAM; also supports Labelflash direct-disc labels using compatible Labelflash media

* The next-generation Intel® Core™2 Duo processor is based on the innovative Intel® Core™ microarchitecture, so it runs faster and is more energy-efficient for cooler, quieter operation
* 17" WUXGA TFT widescreen display with 1920 x 1200 resolution
* 200GB SATA hard drive (7200 rpm)
* NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS graphics with 512MB of GDDR3 discrete video memory; high-definition audio (2-channel); HDMI connector

The only thing I really don't like about the gateway is that my i9300 has 6 usb ports and the gateway has 3

I liked having an external, mouse, G15, laptop cooler, printer, and cellphone charger hooked up all at one time, but that's fixed with a USB hub for home.

I wonder how the graphic cards line up, I would think having one 512mb card vs sli 256 would fair better, epecially with heat and power consumption.

Yeah so now I am typing on my new gateway, I picked it up for $1159 gotta love tax free shopping in Delaware!

I just jumped up from the i9300 and I love this already, though I will have to get XP loaded up on this thing.

^^ try to go for dual boot. Then at least a workable vista partition, just in case having issue with XP drivers. Cool and congrats on the new laptop!

cheers ...

You've been posting this message all over the board today but keep in mind that 3DMark06 is highly optimized for SLI where many games are not. So while you may have higher scores in synthetic benchmarks many games will behave differently. In some cases SLI may not offer any improvement over the single card while in other cases it may offer up to 80% improvement. It depends on a great many factors including, the drivers, the game, the CPU, and the resolution and optional settings you've enabled.

Also the SLI configuration will almost certainly generate more heat, noise, and use more power than the single card configuration it's competing with. While I understand you're happy with your SLI setup I'm trying to offer more detailed information for shoppers who have not yet selected a system.

Personally I think the Dell XPS 1730 is better choice.
