Is it possible to upgrade to windows XP 64 from Windows XP Professional 32 bit, without having to reformat the harddrive?

nope, it requires a clean install. theyre not even the same codebase, XP x64 is based on Server 2003.

Will it take 8 gigs of ram? I am planning on using this for zbrush, which can handle 256 gigs of ram. Which isn't a viable option now I know.

Or would windows vista 64 bit be better? 8 gigs is cheapish now. My mother board is an older asus socket 775 model. http://www.directron.com/p5be.html Can't buy it now. Its 2 years old.

in all honesty Vista 64-bit would be much better. XP x64 was rather narrowly released, and does not have very good hardware support in regards to drivers, whereas for nearly everything for Vista they release both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers together. XP x64 also may have some strange effects too, when i was running XP x64 on my Gateway notebook, my system clock was falling drasticly behind, but the actual clock in BIOS would be unaffected, so I think it was mistiming the hardware buses. XP x64 has a memory limit of 128 GB.

So now the question is, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227290

That ram or this ram

I can't seem to find my mobo on asus site anymore so I can't check if there are any issues with the ram.

Yeeha! Ordered. 350 bucks, but should be worth it. I wonder what the performance increase will be with 8 gigs and 64 bit OS as opposed to 2 gigs windows xp 32 bit. Will I be able to break the 10 million poly limit in zbrush? I hope so!

So what needs to be installed first? The RAM or the OS?
Yeah, I'm real happy with Vista 64 bit Home Premium SP1. Not many problems yet but some old software won't run unless patched well or old devices don't have device drivers for it [from orig mfgr]. Gettting it for $79 from Newegg special was a steal! I'd rather have to extra features in 64 bit Vista over XP 64.

In all reality it doesn't matter, but I'd install the RAM first just to get it out of the way.

Hello everyone, i tried this once to upgrade my XP 32bit to 64bit but when i do this it degrade my XP to Sp1. Is it true that Xp 64bit is available only in Sp1...?

There is a Service Pack 2 for Windows XP 64-bits, it also seems that there won't be any Service Pack 3 for this version as Microsoft will no longer be upgrading the XP platform.

In all honesty, unless you really, really need Windows XP 64 you are better off just switching to a 64-bit version of Windows 7.

with window 7 64bit available, guess this is the best option now.
