Ubuntu install and wireless card

Thread Starter
I have installed the new Linux Ubuntu 8.10 on a separate partition of my HP Pavilion zd8000.

However when I boot into the OS my wireless card is turned off. It cannot be turned on again by pressing the wireless button on the upper right of the keyboard.

How can I turn this on parentally so that the card is on whenever I boot the machine into either OS?

Also how can I find the model number of the Broadcom device?

Thanks in advance. Bob.

I just had that problem. You probably need a third party driver, and I bet your internal wireless card is a Broadcom card. What I did was I went to system > administration > hardware drivers and then it should ask if you want to use other drivers or third party drivers and you should be able to activate it. (you'll need to plug your computer into a DSL line or dial up to activate it, I did).

Hope that helps. I think you'll like Ubuntu.

Yes 8.10 (as I found last night) is the first ubuntu distro to actually support broadcom....now to get it to work with my universities wep2 network.
