I have a dell m1530 new notebook and was wondering how well linux runs on it. I am planning to use alot of microsoft office programs, such as word, excel, access, outlook 2007. Thanks in advance.

Hmm... something out of that isn't adding up. Going to LInux to use MS programs? While it can be done, I would have to ask if you need MS Office or will something along the lines of Open Office 3.0 work for you? Otherwise I would reccomend looking into Crossover Office and whatever version of MS Office they support. If you wish to save money you can do it yourself via wine but it takes a bit more work.

In as far as Linux on the XPS m1530, wasn't that one of the ones that offered it pre-installed at one point? At any rate here are two older articles I found via tuxmobile.com. These (Distributions) are over a year old now though, and the newer versions of the distributions likely run even better.

It shouldn't matter what kind of PC notebook you use to run Linux. The thing is, why do you want to run Linux when you're sure you want all those MS apps? OK, if you insist, I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 on my notebook (happens to be a Toshiba) but it runs Word and other MS and Adobe programs just fine under Codeweavers' CrossOver. Find their site and go through the list of compatible apps that Crossover will run.

I've had tons of people (on the Ubuntu Forum) get upset with me for running Photoshop when I could use Ubuntu's Gimp and WORD when I could use OpenOffice. But when you've been using these apps for many years, you knda just don't want to have to learn another one, plus they really aren't the same.

I just bought a new XPS M1530 (I love it), wiped the drive and installed a fresh copy of XP-Pro. Much better.

Good luck!
