It shouldn't matter what kind of PC notebook you use to run Linux. The thing is, why do you want to run Linux when you're sure you want all those MS apps? OK, if you insist, I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 on my notebook (happens to be a Toshiba) but it runs Word and other MS and Adobe programs just fine under Codeweavers' CrossOver. Find their site and go through the list of compatible apps that Crossover will run.
I've had tons of people (on the Ubuntu Forum) get upset with me for running Photoshop when I could use Ubuntu's Gimp and WORD when I could use OpenOffice. But when you've been using these apps for many years, you knda just don't want to have to learn another one, plus they really aren't the same.
I just bought a new XPS M1530 (I love it), wiped the drive and installed a fresh copy of XP-Pro. Much better.
Good luck!
