HP Compaq v2000 Eating RAM?

Hi, I just put Ubuntu on an old laptop I just got for free. It has 512 MB of RAM and a 120 GB hard drive with a 1.6 GHz AMD 64 bit processor. I put 64 bit Ubuntu on it and it's constantly freezing up and lagging. I went to the system memory and found that it only displayed 370 MB of RAM, with about 100 percent of it being used. It was having to cut into swap as well. I was like what? In the bios, it lists it having 512 MB and on the cards it says 256 MB (there are two). I went to memtest to investigate, finding that it said 129 MB of ram were being "reserved". I guess that's for the video card? Has this happened to anyone else with this computer? Does it need 128 MB of RAM for the ATI VGA card? I'm just wondering what's going on (I've already ordered a stick of 1 gig ram, it's in the mail).

I would wait for more ram and then see. You might want to review the drivers used on the 64bits environment. Ubuntu should run fine with the current specs that you have

cheers ...
