Planning to buy m15x

Hi all,

This is my first post in this forum. After doing a lot of reading about the m15x and all its issues that came with it, i kind of stepped back from buying one. Few months has gone now the urge of buying one came to me again.

So my question for all recent m15x owners(or anyone for that matter)

1-Is the bad hinge still a problem in the ones they sell now?

2- Does the heat and down clocking still occurs in the ones they sell now?

Thanks for your time!

Hoping for an answer. Really hesitant on this thing right now.

I don't know about your first question, but the overheating then downclocking problem was addressed by a BIOS update. Also, the ones they sell now have a different video card (9800M GT instead of the 8800M GTX) that runs cooler, so that shouldn't be an issue anymore.

The heat issue was resolved some time ago. A BIOS update has changed the GPU fan RPM and it works great. They also corrected a setting with CPU downclocking, it was never really a “problem” there was just no way to run your CPU 100% all the time, now there is.

As for the stress cracks, there is not enough evidence to support that claim. All I’ve seen is a couple of post on the internet about it, you’d need 1000’s of reports for this to be a legitimate problem. I’ve seen no stress cracks or evidence of possible stress cracks on my m15x. Did you get that rumor from NBR?

Like Djembe said, you can get the m15x with the 9800m GT vs. the 8800m GTX. These two GPU’s 3D performance is very close.

I love the m15x, its my 4th notebook from Alienware and by far the best.

But time has passed on and i am sure all of these problems should be fixed by now. I have sent E-mails to Alienware 2 weeks ago with no answer yet about these issues. Thats why i would love to hear more about it from the recent owners or those who had issues with the m15x.

Planning to spent roughly $3000. I want to make sure that ill be getting a stable gaming machine

Thanks again for the reply, hoping to see more!

I am one of those who recently had hinge problems on mine. I was opening the lid one day and hearing the usual creaks it makes when opening it except this time it came with a pop! The hinge and bezel were literally separating from the lid. I had heard of this issue on a different forum so I wasn't too shocked. Called Roswell and they said that they had since reinforced that area of the lid. So, I should be getting it back with a new lid. We will see. I have confidence that they will get it fixed right the first time. Overall, I love the m15x. If they really did reinforce the lid area on the new ones you shouldn't have any problems.
