8790 Firewire L-Type Connector/Adapter

Anyone know where I can get an "L-type" 4-pin Firewire adapter/connector/cable? Tried Radioshack and they don't have it. I am planning to hook up an external HDD via firewire and as all of you 8790 owners know, the firewire port is located in the front. If an L-type connector exists, it would look cleaner than a regular connector would.

Try this link and put in your local ZIP code. I bet they have it in stock but I would call first and make sure you say 6-pin to 4-pin Firewire. If you say L-shaped they get confused.

Object of the question is to reduce the amount of "real estate" that the plug has at the front of the machine. The reply for the R/S product does not do this. I have searched; however, have not found one that provides the intended results L-shaped is really a 45 degree "offset" adapter/plug so that the space taken on the front of the machine is minimized. "Off topic a bit" but the same can be said for the 75 Ohm to RCA connector for the tuner (Now this you can get at R/S).

Yes G-omaha ... that's exactly what I'm looking for. I guess it is a bit off topic but I figured that maybe a number of 8790 owners would like to know where they can find this connector if they're as "picky" as I am .... I have the L-types for the TV tuner as well as the speaker plugs .... don't know if the firewire version exists.

Ok the "L-Shape", I misunderstood- I have not found any L-Shaped Firewire or USB cords before.

Mabey this....http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=PA215U

But you have to use a 6-pin to 4-pin adapter which may make it stick out even more.

I hate it when they put ports in the front, even the side ones bug me.

Good rule of thumb...If you put one on the front, put one on the back.

Thanks. It also looks like placement in front is spaced far enough from the speaker so the cord will not block it. You'll have to look at the pictures close to see if the right angle or left angle is the right one. I'd like to see a picture with the all your plugs in to see what it looks like. In case I get one with the front designed that way.

Way to go, CP.

Nice find! Altho' the $25 price tag seems a bit excessive

Looking at the schematics, it looks like the left angle cable would work best with the 8790, so that the cord goes around the left side of the laptop and doesn't obscure the audio jacks on the front.

A 4-pin firewire jack has a tiny rectangular cutout on one side of the plug, and a dented surface on the opposite side. The actual pins are up against the dented side. On my 8790, the input jack requires the dented side to be facing up. The scematics at CP's site show that the left-angle cable would bend away to the left if inserted dented-side up.

20 to 25 bucks is what I would expect to pay, in-store retail, for a regular 6 to 4 pin. I just bought one for $23 at a Computer Renaissance (wish I'd waited).

Really? Dang. I picked one up here in Japan for the equivalent of about US$7~8 and thought that was highway robbery (and no, things aren't usually cheaper here in Japan; For instance, the Fujitsu N5010 which can be had in the US for ~$2500 is ~$3500 here).
