Inverter issues

Greeting all!

I'm a real noob here, but I've run out of resources to resolve an issue I'm having with me Area 51m, model 766SNO

Firstly I should say that I purchased my Alienware USED from Craigslist. It's definitely an overkill for what I need it for and it's a tad...loud, but I'm a huge fan of my lap top.

However...

After having the laptop for about 2 months my inverter went on the fritz, by which I mean the computer booted up just fine, great picture, but after about 30 seconds or so - dark. There was still an image on the screen, but it was almost invisible. After checking the answer box, it sounded like an inverter issue so I ordered a new one (DAC-08B031 Rev:1B / 76-030562-1B). For the life I couldn't fine one anywhere except from PC Hub in Singapore.

Once installed, all was right with the world once again as the screen no longer went dark. Alas, my joy lasted exactly 23 days because it started happening again. Nuts. The kind folks in Singapore sent me a replacement as it was under warrently, but this time the honeymoon lasted all of 6 hours - darkness had returned! Oddly enough, unlike the previous times this issue seems to be sporatic - sometimes I turn on my laptop and I can use it for hours at a time, other times it lasts about 30 seconds and then the screen goes dark again. Seemingly there's no rhyme or reason to which will happen.

So, Oh Alienware guru's - what am I missing? I can't imagine what else the issue might be, but can I really have 3 bad inverters in 3 months? Is there an inverter tester one can get to ensure my new inverter is...er...inverting? (I'm very technical!) Could it be a wiring issue instead? And the real question is - what to do next? If anyone could give me a lead on where to get a new inverter I suppose I could try another one, but I'm no longer certain that it's the inverter that's the problem.

Thanks all!

Hello, unfortunatly I can't help you at all, but I have the same laptop in cyborg green, same sorta situation blah blah blah.....anyways my machine does the same thing...I havnt actually changed the inverter yet though as mine so far doesnt do it very often. When it dims like that I just close the lid and reopen it and it's fine again. Please let me know if you have found an answer for this problem.

Thanks

That fact that th e problem went away w/ each new inverter lets you know that it IS the inverter, alas it may mean something is causing them to go bad so quickly. The only real issue that could cause such early failure is poorly regulated power, if the inverter is recieving insufficient juice, or power spikes, could cause the early failure.

Or it could be that the replacements look the sh!t, but are not actually the correct part/specs for that particular laptop, causing failure.

Or it could be crappy parts from singapore, thats not really that far fetched.

My best advice would be to try to find the part from a different supplier, and monitor the volt/amp/wattage of the part immediately after install for a day or two. If it is recieving a bad flow of juice, man just start lookin for a replacement, I dont even know what to do then short of replacing the whole MB.

Thanks for the replies - I THINK I havethe problem resolved.

After doing everything I could think to do, I turned it over to an expert and we've had a break through. Turns out, it is NOT an inverter, a bulb, or a screen issue. Seems that there was a wee sensor on the screen that was stuck and therefore the screen was actually going to "sleep". Not the PC, as that still runs in the "darkness", but in the stuck position the laptop was thinking that the top was down and so it was going to sleep.

So far, so good!

Thanks again, all.
