Tick sound from laptop internal speakers on pressing any key on keyboard

Hello Everybody,

I need your help. I am facing a strange problem with my Inspiron 6400, a tick sound is heard from the laptop internal speakers everytime I press a key on keyboard OR even if I press a multimedia key provided at the front of the laptop. This has never happened before and I am unable to fix it.

The sound starts coming as soon as the system boots up. I have both Vista and XP installed so I get an option to select the OS I want to choose on startup. I hear the sound on pressing any key of keyboard even at this stage before selecting the OS. This confirms that it has nothing to do with the OS but is something wrong at the hardware level or BIOS, which I want to find out and need your help.

Two days back there was a Blue screen with some error (which I couldn't recall) and the problem started after that. It asked me to shutdown the machine to prevent further damage. I forcefully shut it down and then it wouldn't boot until I pressed the ESC key several times. However after that, the system is booting up normally but the sound keeps coming. How annoying it is.

I tried muting the internal PC speakers from Vista/XP but to no avail. Please help!

Thanks

eeee! no one to reply. My bad luck!

I just found that the sound is actually coming from the laptop speakers themselves, even when they are muted. Any ideas?

Go into BIOS and make sure there's not an option for keyboard click. I can't remember if an i6400 BIOS has that option or not. I know some Dell laptops in the past have had it and some haven't. Others only do it when the system board is in manufacturing mode.

Thanks for responding. My BIOS does not seem to have any such option. How should I do it myself?? Please help!!!

Try checking under keyboard properties. That might be where the option is?

Yes, try the control panel, or look for "keyboard properties"

Oh I tried all that. Moreover I believe it should be nothing to do with the Operating system because as I wrote earlier the problem comes even before loading the OS, which suggests it's something related to the BIOS or CMOS, I don't know. I tried flushing the BIOS and making default settings in it but nothing worked. It seems my motherboard is fu**** up.

I remember one thing though, when I was running the Dell inbuilt scan (which can be done by pressing F12 and selecting the scan option), I found error at one point on my harddisk (perhaps somekind of read error). But I am not sure if this should be the culprit. I would consider formatting my harddsik and reinstalling everything as the last option only.

However, now I will try opening my laptop, then removing and putting back the coin cell to see if it helps.

Let me know if you have any other ideas. Thanks very much for your time.

Hey everybody, I fixed it myself. Just wanted to let you know what I did.

I opened my laptop screws, removed the keyboard, the internal coin cell and the fan. Cleaned the fan, refixed the coin cell and keyboard and wow! things are back to normal. No more irritating sound on pressing any keys. I am so happy I fixed it myself. At one time I was thinking my motherboard has gone, because I had tried everything and nothing seemed to work. This idea suddenly came to my mind to pick out the coin cell and replace it back and I think this is what worked, although not sure.

One more thing, afer replacing the coin cell and screwing things back, when you start the laptop it detects the change in time and ask you to enter the BIOS and fix the time. You have to press the F2 key, enter BIOS and change the time to current time.

Thanks everybody for giving me your time.

Good to know the problem has been resolved. I was about to conclude that possibly something was not connected 100% correctly inside the system.
