HELP!! I just jacked up my E1705

Well, long story short...

I tried to speed up my 7900GS by first flashing it with one of juanlu's BIO's. I have BIOS Rev. 0 and I used the rom according to the bios. It booted back up fine but my games wouldnt run right. After searching everywhere on this site(most of these threads are YEARS old) I find we no longer need to flash our BIOs to overclock. So i used one of zzpulps roms to flash it back to stock(790GSS.rom). Still no gaming without freezes. I have tried several different drivers. Currently using NBF_MobileForce_VS_174.31-x64. Im using the laptop now so I cant imagine I have fried the GPU but games or 3DMARK just slideshow. I cleaned old drivers, used Rivatuner to up the clocks 20 points and still nothing. Im on 64bit Vista Ultimate. Can someone help me??? cause my laptop was working fine before I did this crap. I just wanted a little more kick in my games. Now I cant seem to find a good driver other than the ones Windows updates keeps offering. Even they arent fixing my freezing in games.

Thanks

Use Rivatuner to show the realtime clocks of your GPU. Check to make sure your 3D clocks are being used when you open a game.

Yeh thats it..its underclocking to 100MHz core and mem. I know this has been talked about before because I read it somewhere on here yesterday....uggh...search again for a fix I guess. You wouldnt happen to know off the top of your head what the fix is do ya??? I will look again but someone may know it and reply before I can find it again!!

All the fixes I can think of off the top of my head are a bit technical and have repercussions. I suppose you should make sure you use whatever the latest driver cleaner is when you uninstall the driver. Unfortunately, my experience in XP has been that I have to use the newer driver cleaner (not free) on newer drivers (although I guess I could manually find garbage entries but that would take awhile).

Hey thanks man,

I think I may have found the solution but havent tested it enough. But I read on another forum where you had to disable powermizer, which lead me to the solution(I think). I ran it thru one test and the GPU didnt downclock but I need to run thru several more before I come up with a conclusion. I ended up tweaking some values in the RivaTuner registry and then clicked "Force constant performance level" to performance 3D. I will check back in after I find a suitable clock to run with and test it.

Yes, forcing powermizer off is definitely a solution but I don't think the repercussions are worth it. This means that you are constantly using your 3D clocks even on your desktop. Anyway, I will be back on after class.

Well, I have tried countless things and cannot even get my card back to normal. Powermizer off 3Dmark05 made one pass at a little over 6690 and the next run was slide show. I back out to check clocks with GPU-z and they were still at default clock speeds where I set them so I know its not downclocking. Im at a loss at what to do. I know the GPU its fine(I hope) but now I just feel like I totally nerfed my card.

Personally, I only trust Riva to tell me the current clock speeds. Older drivers will actually tell you when the card underclocks via the nvidia event log.

Ok using Riva to tell me my clocks, when doing the whole slideshow in 3D Mark05, the only thing that fluctuated was the temp. However, what is the "Core VID, non-dimensional" supposed to read on a stock 7900GS?? Riva is telling me 7.00. Is that right??

For 3d, yes. I will try to think of a better solution for you after class.

Well after weeks of fighting this problem with no solution I have decided I am going to have to replace my video card. Sad thing is, it worked perfect before I did this. I have tried every solution and driver under the sun but to no avail. Sometimes I can fool the GPU by jumping into a game after a restart and it will play fine, but if I let it sit then jump in, the game will freeze then lock up. Its perfect in 2D but 3D...forget it.

I also checked out the DXDIAG and noticed something funny. It says my video card has "Approx. Total Memory: 1656MB

Shouldnt that read 256MB for a 7900GS??? At any rate I am at a loss.

I am hoping that mfractal still has his 7950GTX for sale cuz I am over fighting this problem.

If you want, you can just install ATI Tools and tell it to boot with your system and tell it to set the clocks you want at every boot.

That way ATI Tools sets the 3d clock for your games manually every boot and it should work (not a fix, more like a work-around).

Goodluck.

Isnt that the same as using RivaTuner to "Force constant performance level" to performance 3D and have it set to "apply settings at startup"?

By the way Maconi, nice laptop you have(had) for sale..I liked the benchmarks!!

You can definitely hard code the frequencies you want in the rom. That is the most reliable solution but it has repercussions. Anyway, I think it just might be that you arent cleaning (with the newer driver cleaner) the drivers after uninstalling. I had some weird errors when I didn't do that using newer drivers.

Im removing the NVIDIA drivers via control panel then booting into safe mode and using driver sweeper. Is there something else I need to be doing? I did a fresh install of Windows 3 times and all 3 times the with fresh drivers it acted the same way. I am positive the clocks are not changing either that or RivaTuner is lying to me.

What rev 7900 GS do you have? I can post a 7900gs rom that will be bad with powersaver features (on AC at least) but it should run at 3d and be unlocked no matter what driver you use.

No need to follow up on this issue anymore. I have my laptop sold as is and I am buying a new one. But I have learned my lesson...leave the overclocking to desktops and leave laptops alone.

Thanks zzpulp for all of your help!!

Hmm....alright. Although I'd like to just mention that I seriously doubt anything was permanently damaged on your hardware/software. Anyway, the more reason for me to write a guide eventually I guess.
