Studio 17 Constant HD Activity Normal???

Thread Starter
I reported to Dell that my Studio 17 was experiencing constant HD activity. The HD light is always blinking lightly, and brighter with more intense activity occurs. They had me run the gambit of tests and when I reported my results, I got an email back that this is NORMAL for my laptop? WHAT? A laptop that continually access the HD? I replied questioning this, and was assured this is normal. Is someone smokking something or is this indeed the case? Here are the specs:
Inteal Core2 Duo T5850 @ 2.16 GHZ
4GB Ram
2 320GB 5400 HDs

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

New pc?....vista learning your usage...indexing....pre fetch....auto de fragging

Check processes and google to see what they do and if they can be stopped.

Malware/spyware

Could try notebook hardware control and experiment with the different hard drive profiles.[fast, silent, spin down etc]
http://www.pbus-167.com/ use "bugfix" version lower down the page.

Vista's indexing and SuperFetch systems constantly access the hard drive. if your system is new it will do it a lot as it builds the initial indexes, then it will do less over time

P.S. please don't double-post your threads in multiple sections, thank you

Yes, it is a brand new PC. That is good to know about Vista "learning" my usage". Not sure it is a great feature, but good to know.

I will check also check into the notebook hardware control. I did do virus and spyware scans and nothing was reported.

Also, sorry about the dbl post, won't do it again.

It could be Antivirus frequently popping a scan for viruses. I hated my Antivirus original HD so I use my others that don't have Antivirus, so no bothersome scans.

This is still bugging me. As far as I know there is no anti-virus on the PC. Also, the XPS 1353, which is also brand new does not have this behavior and it does have McAfee running. Is there anyway to turn off the index behavior of vista to rule that out?
