Dell Inspiron 1100 - Kernel Panic, Can't install Windows or wipe HDD

Thread Starter
got ahold of a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop, and it seems to have some problems.

It had 2 copies of Windows XP installed, and I could boot one up only on safe mode, with fuzzy graphics. I decided to wipe the harddrive with a bootable cd with DNuke on it. After it started wiping I got a Kernel Panic.

I also tried alot of other programs to wipe the harddrive including several other windows xp cd's. All of them seemed to have froze during setup.

Also, I ran memtest on it for a couple of hours (surprised it actually booted) and it said there are no problems.

Can anyone help me out?

Possibly a defective hard drive, which wouldn't surprise me in the least on an older system whose prior existence is not entirely known.
