MiniPCI Tuners for Aurora 7700

This is my first post here so please be patient with me until I catch on to the 'best' protocol for submitting a question and hopefully starting a useful thread.

Additionally, I HAVE searched this Forum and, although there is a TON of info here, I have been unable to garner ALL of the pieces I need to continue further in my quest. Thanks MUST go out to at least HammerHead, Ramrod, and BFisch06 for what I HAVE been able to glean here...Kudos guys, some Forums have a couple of 'dedicated' reps...THIS one has MANY.

I have an Aurora 7700 that was purchased used (7 kids, 6 female, 4 of those in college...I couldn't POSSIBLY afford a 'new' one...) about a year ago and have had little to complain about. The chassis was one of my reasons...I'm somewhat destructive with my techno-gadgets and this thing is a true tank...but I was most interested in the platform. I'm an A/V Engineer and the I/Os (a REAL DB9, Composite and S-Video Inputs S-Video Output, Tuner capable, yada, yada...) were an awesome plus. Unfortunately, mine did NOT come originally equipped with the TV Tuner thus rendering the CV and SV inputs moot. So, I went on a quest for a Tuner...which has been one of the most daunting tasks I have ever endeavored upon. Therefore, I'll state my question(s) and reveal what I (think I) know and have learned

My first understanding is that there were 2 different tuners available: the AveMedia M102 and a Yuan PVR MPC-622 MCE. I was since led to believe that there are several...if not many...Mini PCI Tuners that will function in this particular Laptop. Research raised so many more questions, and an eventual purchase that has caused much frustration, that now I am simply confused.

My GOAL is to get a Tuner so as to access the CV and SV INPUTS in the back of the unit...and AW, AverMedia, and other Tech Support resources have been almost useless in information regarding the compatibility (other than the 2 afore mentioned models) of ANY alternative Tuner Card (not that they didn't try...except for AverMedia...it seems that their access to the 'information' is simply minimal cross platform). Having the use of the actual Tuner itself would have just been a big bonus.

I have searched high and low for the M102 and the MPC-622 to no avail...probably to late to the punch, these models are just already out there in the 'wild' and not on anyone's 'shelf' anymore...so, after consulting with AW and Aver (with noted results), I acquired an AverMedia M103 on eBay (apparently NOT from a D900K) and installed it with practically no issues. Although finding the proper software was a nightmare, I did install the M103_3.5.0.47 version and was able to 'bring the card up'. The Tuner part works absolutely fine, but the CV and SV inputs are completely non-functional. Of course, I may be doing 'something' wrong but I am somewhat adept...and damn stubborn/determined...and I feel like I have exhausted my options. So here goes:

1) Is there a known list of Mini PCI TV Tuners that will ALLOW functionality of the CV and SV Inputs (I am aware that the CV RCA is ALSO used...with an adapter...for the RF Connection. That's the part I HAVE been able to get working)?

2) If so, does ANYONE know where I can purchase one of these devices?

3) Alternatively, is there a known version of the AverMedia software that is COMPLETELY COMPATIBLE with the Aurora 7700 (or any OTHER D900K variant)...or...is it known that the M103 will or simply will NOT work in this environment?

To be specific, here's the info on my Blue Box:
Alienware Aurora m7700 (D900K)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
2GB RAM
nVidia GeForce GO 7800 GTX
Hitachi SATA 100GB 7200rpm (x2)
Atheros MiniPCI SuperG Wireless Card (no Bluetooth)
Avermedia MiniPCI M103 Hybrid TV Tuner Card
Windows XP Pro SP3

Truly, I have many other questions about parts, software, and usability issues but I will opt for patience and 'one thing at a time' manners to address this issue before attempting other conflagrations. Thanks in advance for any and all information you may provide, and many thanks to all for simply being here.

Great first post!! Humble and informative (peeps see you did leg work and are not asking them to do it all 4 ya encourages them to help)

Alas I have no answer for u, one suggestion in the future, not everyone cares to read such a lengthy post, If you can make it alot more succinct, at least to begin with, you may widen your audience of possible responders, then dole out the rest of the info as needed.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the response archalien, the props AND the suggestion. I did feel the dredge as I typed, but I wanted to be specific. So...should I kill this one and try again? Honestly, with what I had already read here, I actually expected the answers to be almost plentiful...yet so far you're the one and only response out of <40 views. Any other suggestions on how I should set this one up? Either way, thanks again...

Still Tuned Out,

A couple suggestions, monitor this thread, try one at notebookreview.com, also if you can find the odm for the motherboard, there are likely other companies who sold this same hardware under there own brand, and you might be able to follow those leads to more information.

On my personal m7700a, I had an AverMedia m104 tuner and I was using Nero's Ultra 8 Suite and it worked fine for me. I'll dig around in my laptop to see if I did anything special while it's down for video card problems and post back here if there is. If I recall right, all I did was put in in the miniPCI slot and connect a cable. =/

Thanks for the post, I appreciate any info I can get. I too simply 'plugged' in the card and attached the micro coax, but as yet still have (apparently) no input from the s-video or the composite video pathways...even though the composite input is on the same cable as the tuner input. Do your CV and SV inouts function correctly...or do you only use the Tuner? Thanks again, looking forward to hear if I may have missed something once you get yours back together. Good luck with the video!

Sorry I don't have any experience with the m7700 or the tuner in it... I'm not sure if there are additional connections to make the s-vid or composite ports work, or if they're already connected to the mobo. It may be that they don't connect everything unless the tv tuner is included when ordered from factory.

Here is AW's knowledge base search on m7700 tv tuner. The pics may help you to see if you're missing any connections. You may be able to come up with something by changing the search terms.

I know there are some companies that work on the clevo d900 platform, and they may be able to help you out with advice. ztronics.com is a good place to start. They may be able to tell you what you need to get the ports working.

Just looking at the avermedia page at Alienware, the contents of the package include:

Package Includes

White Box Package Without AVerTV PVR Application
AVerTV USB MCE Device
Dual Head USB Cable
Antenna Connector Cable (SMB to Coaxial)
Driver Installation CD & Quick Installation Guide (PDF)

Do you have the dual head usb cable in addition to the antenna?

Thanks tons Hammerhead...but been there done that w/AW. Additionally, I have the miniPCI version snapped into the mainboard...not a USB add-on. I just had my m7700 completely apart to repair one of the posts that the Video Card attaches to (I was having a ground fault related shutdown issue that had me even closer to insanity) and followed all of the traces from the S-Video connector back to the miniPCI connection point while I was in there. It seems that the setup is all correct and that there are no other connections (other than the micro-coax) needed, and I still get RF but no CV or SV signal. Someone had pity on me and sent me a copy of the M103 software...from a D900K (Alienware even) installation which, although it went VERY smoothly, provided the same exact results. I still feel like I'm missing something low level, but I have looked almost microscopically and have yet to discover the oops. I am re-examining the driver installation sequence to make sure that I got that right, but I had followed their suggestions (okay...I think I followed...) the last couple of times I tried. I'll look at the KB and run around the web again to see if perhaps I dropped a train somewhere in the maelstrom, and I'll post a solution if I ever find one. I sincerely appreciate the response and the suggestion, thanks again.
