When will mobile quad-core be mainstream?

Thread Starter
So right now the only mobile quad core options are the QX9300 and the Q9100. The QX9300 can't be had for less than $1000, and I haven't seen the Q9100 anywhere.

When will quad core mobiles be regularly available and affordable options in notebooks?

My current laptop is on it's last legs, I'm just hoping that when it gives out in the next couple of months I'll be able to replace it with an affordable Core 2 Quad Mobile cpu. That likely, or is Intel not scheduled to release mainstream parts until closer to summer?

I don't think you'll have to wait to long. Intel's newest CPUs are out and they start as quads. It's going to force the laptop market to follow even with the older Core 2 architecture.

It will be out on Calpella the 2009 platform. Latest now is Montevina the 2008 platform.

Look here for all the timeline:

Also mentioned AMD will release AMD Fusion with Calpella, seems like a great battle.

yup, NEX_SASIN is correct: non-"extreme" versions of mobile quad-core CPUs will be out around next July. However, from one chart I found, it looks like they'll still be fairly pricey- around $500 per CPU. There will also be dual-core CPUs released for the Calpella chipset, so the quad-cores look to be more of a high-end notebook processor. It appears that quad-cores won't be totally mainstream (in budget systems as well as performance ones) until Intel releases their Sandy Bridge architecture in 2010 or 2011, but the next step toward mainstream is coming this next July.

True and don't forget the near upcoming DirectX11 hardware compliance and the USB3.0 will be out to support the new Windows 7.

Man how much money i need to spend to keep my tech latest.

How long do you think it will be before you can get a quadcore laptop for 2k? What about 1.5k?

I refuse to spend more than $2k on a laptop...just not worth it

I can only speculate on future pricing, but I would guess that you'll be able to purchase a quad-core notebook for $2000 by September of next year and the year after that, quad-core notebooks will be available for $1500.

I hope I can wait a year!
