Need help please need to get my stuff off of hard drive

Hola everyone,
I have to send my notebook into HP for its 2nd mother board. Only problem is i can't get the computer to boot up so i've removed the hard drive and now i need a way to get my stuff off of it. I have a small external hd which ive tried to put it into and of course it wouldn't work. I do have another HP laptop that is older but do not have a power cord for it so thats out. Please if you know how i can get this data off of the hard drive pretty please respond. I do not want to however end up paying someone to do it for me. I can do it myself i just need to know what i can plug the hard drive into that will work with it in order for me to transfer. BTW the notebook is a DV2310US.

. you meant an external housing for the drive?
. what was the error when you tried to access this external housing?
. does this housing support your drive format (IDE or SATA ...)?

You need an adapter in order to connect it to your desktop. Search Ebay for this adapter : LAPTOP 2.5" HD TO 3.5" IDE HARD DRIVE HDD ADAPTER KIT

Connect it to your desktop as Slave or Master depending what IDE cable available in your system or to your external HD enclosure. If it's still working, then there're no problem to read or copy data.
A non bootable hard drive doesn't mean it's not working. A corrupted system file may prevent it from booting but it's still readable when connecting to a desktop or a laptop as a non boot disk.
This is what Data Recovery guys do and charge you for over $160 just for the first 10GB of data. A whole hard drive will cost a lot more and they just use a cheap 5 bucks adapter to copy data.
