M460 Troubles

I have two Gateway M460 notebooks with the same trouble and I hope someone can help.
They will not start up consistently sometimes they will boot and then freeze then other times they will not even display yet power lights are on.
Here is what I have checked or changed so far.
Battery
AC power adapter
Removed and cleaned the fan also checked the CPU for visible heat damage
RAM
Reformat HD and reinstall OS
I am thinking this may be a system board issue but I am looking for ideas where to look next.

. You were able to format the drive and re-install OS?
. I would still try to get another drive and see

Thanks for the reply I did use another drive from a working laptop with the same results. It has me puzzled why it will install and work but randomly stop or not start at all?????

Would it start if you press on some part of the laptop (palm rest, keyboard etc ..)?

I can knock it around a little and it does not change things. Is there anyplace that is known to short or open on these system boards?

It is not so much of a short, the in-thing nowadays is a re-flow of the gpu area. Search the forum for this subject. Your comp's symptom seems to fit.
