Will Acer Aspire One mini xp have wifi problems?

Thread Starter
The model I am looking to get is the Acer Aspire One 160gb 6 celled battery, 8.9" 1gb Ram WinXP based system.

After reading a bit about people having connectivity problems (very big deal for me in a laptop), I'm scared on whether or not I should buy it. Everything else looked great but I don't really know Acer at all, so the idea that they could have shipped out defective Wifi chips and not fix it due to costs could be a reality.

However, when looking at reviews, it seems like everyone who is having these problems have 1) the LINUX version, and 2) the NON-6 celled battery version (120gb Aspire 512 ram 349$ version) and no one seems to differentiate between these (I don't know if it actually makes a difference though).

So, are there connectivity problems on the Acer Aspire One or is this an isolated problem that could happen to all notebooks?

Sounds isolated to me. I have certainly not had any problems with my model. Its not an Aspire One but I use my wifi all the time

there was an issue where the wifi would disappear in the system info screen on the linux version, a bios update resolved it. (3305 or higher)

for the xp version, some have said that the wireless disconnects becuase the One uses the atheros chip (5007EG), or variant. This is always typical, with some wifi cards. if you have issues with your connection, always update drivers for the wireless card, and update the firmware for your router.

also take into consideration wireless noise due to other access points near you. mine used to have a broadcom card that would always disconnect, determined it was because too many access points in range using the same channel. had to troubleshoot the issue by changing channels until I found a stable one. not an issue with the wireless card or router, just too many wireless networks nearby.

Being too close to a 2.4ghz cordless phone or it's base station can cause disconnects also, we had to change to a 5.8ghz phone.

WPA connect problems.

WEP I hear has no problem
WPA2 I have not had a problem.

I have to connect to a WPA (not WPA2) router occasionally, and have been completely unable to do so.

I can only find questions, no answers, about this problem.

This is on an Aspire One with an Atheros WiFi chip. Don't know if other Aspire models use different Wifi chipsets, or if it is a problem with other models.

If you're not using WPA, you're likely OK, but if you DO need to connect to WPA routers, you may have trouble (or, as in my case, more than trouble: it just doesn't work)

^^ Good possibility. But it is in the small percentage. It all boils down to router and cards compatibility and drivers and firmware (router).

cheers ...
