Ive just bought my second laptop with vista installed! Its got 4gb ram and dual core processor so I thought it would be fine!Wrong!!Its still effin slow!Ive tried changing some processes etc but it dont seem to have much effect!Been told to create a new partition and load xp onto it(good old xp)so does anyone know of a partioning programme available(preferably free)that I can use to do this.Id like to just leave vista on a small partition and use the rest for xp(Ive got a 320 gb h/d)otherwise can anyone tell me exactly what to disable or remove to cut this massive operating system down to size?thanks all

If you have an Ubuntu Live CD lying around, you can use GParted inside of it. If you don't have that, I'm pretty sure you can download GParted separately and burn it to a disk. Google "GParted."

Omg what are you talking about, Vista is one of the best OS i've ever used, i got to admit it uses "some" system resouces and did have corrupted DB of external storage devices. But a format is now fine.

If your laptop has i965 chipset aka Santa Rosa platform then is very smooth to run full Aero mode. My guessing is your laptop comes with OEM Vista plus loaded with other junkwares (bloat ware). A clean reinstall Vista will solve the problem alone.

I have Vista Ultimate took about 10GB (with pagefile) while Home Basic took about 8GB (with pagefile). But basically they're all the same so i choose Ultimate edition. If you want to rip it you can use this > www.vlite.net but customise it at your own risk, only experienced user know what to rip. I tried the mininum i can get Ultimate down to about 670MB ISO and installed about 4GB total (with pagefile).

Tip: Vista without SP1 use alot more HDD space then the Vista has SP1 intergrated into ISO.

Many OEMs don't give you the option for a clean install. They provide a restore disk that only allows you to put the computer back to the out of box state when you bought it. This is one of the reasons I buy notebooks bare with no OS so I can configure it myself.

I dual boot on my desktop but I use two separate physical disks. I generally prefer XP also. Just the higher boot and shut down times of Vista annoy me too much.

here was a problem with dual booting that may have been solved now but it would cause XP to wipe the system restore points on your Vista install whenever you booted into XP. Vista had no negative effect on your XP install. There are workarounds out there other than using separate drives (I disable the Vista boot volume in XP device manager to hide it from XP).

Partition Magic allows you to partition hard drives without reformatting but I don't think its free anymore. There is another free one out there that I can't think of the name right now. But if you look around they're out there.

Well you obviously haven't loked very hard, there's a partition tool built into Vista already (Start>Computer Management>Click Disk Management under storage and away you go. right click on the drive, select shrink partition and then follow the on screen prompts)

I see, i didn't know they still giving out restore disc then the full OS installation disc these days. My first compaq back in 2000 was given with a restore disc, then i never recieve a disc on 2 of my acer laptops and the recent dead compaq. But my current Dell comes with Vista installation disc deparated with another bloat ware disc and driver disc. The Vista installation disc gives a clean OEM Vista but funny that Dell do give out bloat ware disc.

True those OEM OS are a waste of money. But is hard to find a suitable laptop that doesn't comes with OEM OS in Australia.

There might be a partition tool built in vista but it doesnt allow you to get rid of it and load another o/s on!I still think xp is the best system theyve ever made!quick and easy to use!microsoft know theyve messed up so microsoft 7 is being rushed as a replacement!I wont be rushing out to buy it thats for sure!

Its not just australia!most of the decent laptops with good spec in the uk come with vista!I know some like dell will supply xp if you ask but others are already set up in the shops and there is no choice! My last laptop struggled so I thought with the spec on my new one it would fly!Thats why I wanna put xp on again!

i too hate VISTA...coz of its large utilisation of sys resources..

i dumped vista..and am now back to the golden XP....

P.S:i heard that windows 7 is very good then vista in terms of use of sys resources..
W7 and Vista are just as good in system resources management.

W7 is more attractive mostly because the Vista users have survived the pain and appreciating a new OS that takes in consideration most of the complaints of Vista in the start.

cheers ...

If you still need free partitioning software (paragon) here it is:

Just an opinion... Vista is what XP was when everybody was still using Windows 3.1. Not everyone was ready to switch over to XP back then as well and everyone was complaining about stability, performance, etc... all the stuff that we're hearing now with Vista as opposed to XP. Windows 7 is just an improved version of Vista (IMHO they should have just made it into SP2 instead of renaming it W7.)

Maybe we should just give it some time and eventually things will stabilize. I too was very vary happy with XP and when I switched over to Vista last year, I was a bit worried about the stability of Vista... until SP1 for Vista came out, now I'm enjoying using Vista.

I am so confused right now.

Vista is okay, though RC1 of Win 7 is treating me much better.

Hi DarqHelmet,

Didn't mean to confuse you with my statement. What I am trying to say is that there's so much negative remarks about Vista similarly with XP when it was first launched (and everybody was still using Windows 3.1 or 3.11). After SP1 was released for XP, people started upgrading to XP and now we're in the same cycle again.... Vista has SP1 now and hopefully a few more upgrades.

There's always hesitation at first but eventually everyone gets there... just my opinion.

Well, got my comps up to Vista SP2 - nothing but praise. But yes, agreeing with Darq, W7 is trumping Vista, in general.

cheers ...

Wow! SP2 is out!? Hmmm... not sure why it didn't come out of my auto update. Downloading now... thanks for the info qhn!
